Low cost Chinese AGM battery - a "Weize" choice?

As one YTer is fond of saying, "Let's find out!"

A new segment of inexpensive Chinese AGM batteries has entered the market.

In these times when retail aftermarket batteries flirt with $200 price points, and AGM versions tread well into the $200 range, outside of Walmart and the warehouse clubs, the notion of a sub-$150 AGM battery is no doubt attractive.

However, that can be rendered moot if the product proves to be false economy, and fails to serve for a reasonably expected time period, and isn't supported by the retailer.

This segment is relatively new, so there is little to no long-term data on how durable they will prove to be, and that can only be discovered though experience.

So begins a trial, and gamble of sorts, to see if these are genuinely worthwhile alternatives.

The subject, an H6/48/91 AGM battery, rated at 70Ah capacity, and 760 CCA (par for the course):
(MSRP is listed at $170, but they typically sell for $120-$130 direct from the distributor, free shipping, no core charge or sales tax. They are also available through Amazon, who will charge tax.)

Out of the (well-packaged) box, the battery was fully charged, at 12.8v.

A quick evaluation with a conductance tester shows that this example meets the stated specs:

Will such a low cost Chinese AGM batteries turn out to be "Weize" choice?

We shall see. I'll update this accordingly, as needed, but hope not to have that need.

Those who have taken similar bets are welcome to share their experiences.

I bought one of their AGM Group 31's for the camper before I swapped everything over to LifePO4, it worked like a champ. Still going in a friends camper as well, and she takes terrible care of her batteries.

Thanks for doing this, and please do update occasionally. With even Clarios AGMs now showing up with "Made in China" stickers, it is interesting to see if any of these Chinese manufacturers are making a good product that will last a reasonable amount of time.

Looking forward to some updates as see those battery ads all the time. Looks just like the Interstate MTX-48 except for the colors.

I believe all European sized "H" specification batteries must follow a strict conformity for size and case dimensions. That is why they all look the same from all manufacturers for a specific size like H5, H6, H7, H8, H9 etc. Only case color and a few very minor details, for example the handles might have a groove molded into them.

A good chunk of UPS units come with Chinese or Vietnamese batteries in them. China, Korea, India and Vietnam can still smelt leaf. I think it will be OK.

A friend has a Chinese battery in a Suzuki bike. So far, so good.

I recently purchased a Weize AGM battery for my Polaris Trail Boss 330 ATV. It is a 14 (AH size) (not 14 amp hour, but AH is the fitment). It is a 12 Amp hour battery.

So far, it works very well. I had been purchasing Yuasa flooded batteries for this 2003 ATV every 2-3 years. That was no issue when they were $15, a bit more bothersome when they were near $50, but at $90+ for 2 years of service? No thanks.

The Weize AGM was $35 on Black Friday.

Consumer Reports tested multiple examples of a Weize car battery...but only in one size, Group 94 H7...and it did well in all their testing except their accelerated life testing. It did very poorly and thus ranked at the bottom of their rankings.

The wife decided she was going to take the Garage Queen Acura to Florida for a business trip next week. I didn't feel great sending her down there with the 2017 build date Optima Red Top that has been in the car since 2017, so I picked up a new Group 24 Weize for it. Still sending her with a jump pack, but she shouldn't need to use it.

I'm ok with driving a dodgy car, but having her 300 miles+ away and having car problems is not my idea of a fun time for me.

I bought a cheap generic AGM battery for my motorcycle and have just recently replaced it after 11.5 years with another almost identical cheap generic AGM. I didn't particularly check but I expect both were made in China.

China has the most natural mineral resources to make Lith Ion and other batteries. USA does not have these rich resources . I believe China makes most of all of the Lith Ion batteries anyway. Their product quality needs tweaking, no doubt. But they have the minerals, plain and simple. USA does not.

We have resources but they are in California and all the regulations make them hard to extract. There is a huge lithium mine on I-15 just before the Nevada state line.

Also a huge one at the salton Sea was recently discovered.
