i have a 04 tacoma with 2tr-fe engine. i used conventional oil for 10k miles and then i switch to Pennzoil Platinum 10w40. it has 17k miles on it right now and i change my oil last 15k miles. for the past few days i didnt have the time to warm up the car before i go to work. suddenly there is a loud noise like two metal banging each other coming out from the engine during the first 5 seconds after i start the car. what could be the problem?

It would be hard for the valve train to make much real noise usually described as tapping. Banging loudly involves force therefore likely from the pistons (slap), or possibly one of the connecting rod bearings moving around more likely the bottom one. Crank thrust bearings con also make this sound.
what could be the best solution for this problem?
my car did that when i clogged the filter with MoS2 additive. i changed the filter and it completely went away. i changed the oil at the same time, but it was a clogged filter.
The situation may be temperature related. You can check the block with your hand and try to determine the area creating the sounds. It may be just that piston is furthest away from the oil pump or is otherwise oil flow compromised and takes a while to get oil flow to that area. You can try tacoma forums and see if this is a common occurance with your vehicle at your milage.They may also have oil and oil filter recommendations for you.

Is this the first time for 10W40? Doesn't that engine call for a 5W-xx oil? Just how cold is it? The 10W40 might be just too thick when cold, and a 5W will quiet it down. I'm thinking that engine calls for a 5W30.

They use 20W50 in that engine down under. If it's been in there for >2000 miles, I doubt it's the oil (especially PP). Change your filter as others suggested.
FWIW, I start my diesel in below freezing temps with Chevron Delo 15W40 (-38*F pour point) with no issues.

First and easiest is simply the oil filter.
Many cars have anti drainback valves in the oil filters to prevent dry starts.
A bad filter or a wrong type can do this. Even a good one, if it is dented.

You might want to get that 10w40 out of there. I have an '04 Tacoma with the 2.4-liter engine. Toyota calls for 5w30. In early March 2006, when my truck had about 18,000 miles on it, I tried an oil change with 10w30 Castrol GTX. The previous changes had all been 5w30. Late-winter mornings here in South Carolina aren't very cold, but the engine still made unpleasant noises when I started it first thing in the morning. For three or four seconds, it sounded like an old engine with bad hydraulic lifters. I dumped the 10w30 and went back to 5w30, and the noises went away.
Later, I switched to 5w30 Synpower. Cold starts seem a tad quieter with synthetic than with dino. The 2.4 seems to be a mechanically noisy engine in any case, but the oil makes a difference in how many noises it makes.
My daughter's old Honda Civic is similarly fussy. With 5w30 Castrol GTX High-Mileage in the crankcase, that Honda engine clatters and taps when my daughter starts the car on a winter morning. With Valvoline Maxlife in the same weight, the engine makes much less noise. With Mobil Clean 5000 or Havoline, it's practically silent on start-up.

See Gary's post towards the end of the thread. I'd first put the right oil in first, and replace the filter as others have suggested, before digging anywhere else -
