Howdy everyone, long time lurker here. Have a question that I haven't been able to answer about transmission fluids. I have a 2011 Nissan Frontier and want to service the transmission myself basically for sh*ts and grins and have been looking at different fluids. Some say stick with OEM but Nissan fluid is hideously expensive. From what I can gather stuff like Castrol import is Matic-J by another name. On to some other topics: I was in Wally World the other day looking at ATF and noticed the SuperTech MV reads, "recommended for" and the Mercon V reads, "suitable for" is there any difference and also who makes the ATF that goes in their bottles? I know their dino 5w-30 is Mobil in this area.

The Super Tech is probably made by Warren Performance Products,the same company that supplies some of the ST oil.If it is from WPP,they seem to make good stuff.You can look on the bottom of the ST bottle and if it has a WPP or WNE on it,it is from Warren Performance.

If it says that it meets the standards that you need,it shouldnt hurt anything.

You can try this site but I dont know how up to date it is.It is from Walmart and has their MSDS's.

Under warranty...Matic S ONLY! You will only need one service or maybe two during warrnty. I but Matic S from the dealer for my Frontier and drain and refill 4 qts every 8000 miles or so. Matic J is no longer supported by Nissan.

I used Valvoline Maxlife in my dads automatic Nissan with no complaints.

While your ride is under warranty, you're kinda at the mercy of the dealer. Only use approved fluids. This normally means OEM. might be penny foolish, but it's pound wise!

According to the Magnuson-Moss Warranty Act,"Warrantors cannot require that only branded parts be used with the product in order to retain the warranty." Nissan must follow this law too.

They can deny a claim if they can say that the non-specified part led to the claim. If they require a fluid with Matic-S fluid properties and something else is used they may deny a fluid related transmission warranty claim.

They can't deny a paint related claim because you haven't been servicing with Nissan ATF.

Getting the wear particles out early is a good thing and if you have to pay a little bit for the OEM fluid it will still be worth it.

I am not talking of using a part/product that doesnt meet the qualifications,I am saying that as long as it is the correct standard that they cant deny the warranty.

This is just like an oil filter.If a Bosch is used and they say that they prefer a Nissan brand,they cant deny the warrenty based on the fact that a Bosch was used.

They may try and claim that there was a problem because it wasnt their part but that is the purpose of the M-M Warranty Act.

If a company tells you that you can only and must use a certain product,like their brand of trans. fluid,the company must provide the product free of charge.

A company will usually suggest "X" and then say or equivalent to "X" or that the product must meet some type of standard such as Dexron X.

Is there any difference in the transmission in the 2nd gen auto transmissions? I see that Matic S wasn't mentioned in the owners manuals until 2009. Prior to that it was all Matic J. Also, am I wrong to assume that it's Mag1 fluid in the supertech ATF bottles?

My fathers owns, 06 Frontier with stick. I changer oil in his tranny to that one in my sig. He stated it shifts better even when he got truck brand new. I felt improvment too in my car. I beliave LM has simular oil for auto tranny. It's expencive, arount 15-18 for liter, but it's fair I would say. Just my 2 cents.
