Actually, it's rarely mentioned on this board anymore. It's always Mobil 1 or Pennzoil Ultra for everything.

because Amsoil is the only oil I've Never shear out of grade in a bunch if test on mustangs I've seen. and I'm talking being beat on.


By all means, show me some statistics compared to other top tier synthetic brands.

OP has a DI engine and is concerned about shear stability, and is interested in extending his OCI.

It's a decent oil, but not any better than you can buy for $20 - $25.

Use the savings for a high quality oil filter or other maintenance item.

Amazon sells Pennzoil Ultra Euro 5W-40, around $40 for a case of 6 qts. Right now I think I'm split between either Amsoil and Ultra.

I'm an Amazon Prime member so it's really convenient, plus its probably it's similar to the Pennzoil Ultra 5w30 I have in my car now. (Just doesn't meet fuel economy specs).

On the other hand Amsoil makes solid products that are shear stable.

With NAPA's current, and often, discounted house Synthetic (many would argue it's SYNpower) for an astounding $3.49/qt, our OCI having to be conservative per the OM and how that fits neatly with Valvoline oil's showing great wear numbers on short OCI, I won't be trying much else and staying with ASHLAND (I bought a year's worth). Maybe an idea for you as well.

Either way, I trust your Sonata is in good hands.

Thanks for the tip! I'll stop by and see what they have they have to offer.

I just ordered a case of Pennzoil Ultra Euro 5w40 on Amazon for $37.04. Sorry Pablo, I'll pick up some Amsoil a bit later in the summer.

I'll get a used oil analysis done on the Pennzoil Ultra Euro to see how it does (Plan to run it the full 5k). If fuel dilution is high I'll most likely keep it to 3.5K on Quaker State Ultimate Durability or Napa 5w30. Too bad Hyundai doesn't have a OLM system, would be a nice feature.

this a small chart from a friend based off of all UOA on Boss 302,s and gt500s. now its not the end all be all.. but gives your a pretty [censored] good idea of how shear stable Amsoil is compared to other brands in the same vehicles. similar colored lines are from same cars..

Yes, it's a 5W oil for cold starting purposes, so you'd be good down to -35C.

To achieve the 5W rating, the cold pumpability has to be below 40,000 cP at -35C, which is a value that is defined in SAE J300. Generally, 5w30's will have lower cold pumpability viscosity than 5W-40's, but as long as they are below the maximum spec value, the 5W rating is earned.

For example:
Mobil 1 0w20 has cold pumpability of 10,400 @ -40C,
Mobil 1 0w30 has cold pumpability of 13,250 @ -40C,
Mobil 1 0w40 has cold pumpability of 31,000 @ -40C.

Even though the actual viscosities vary, they all come in below the limit for 0W.
