Looking for shear stable 5W-30 Oil

I've been looking at a lot of used oil analysis lately and it appears almost all turbo di engines shear oil down quickly.

I'm considering trying Castrol Edge with titanium (Gold Bottle) or Mobil 1 Extended Performance. Is there any reason to believe these oil will stand up better to shearing? I'll be taking a long road trip over the summer (around 4000 miles) and I want to use something that will give me piece of mind.

really any of the Amsoil 5w30 offerings are greatly more shear resistant. its all up to you and your wants and needs and budget.

Highway cruising is not going to shear your oil down. I would use whichever 5w30 is on sale.

If you insist on using a shear-stable 5w30, you could go for something like Red Line 5w30.

Since it's a summer run, would you consider running a HDEO like Rotella T5 10w30?

I've found Pennzoil Ultra 10w30 to be very stable running 4k oci in my turbo subaru, fwiw.

Just run any 5w40 synthetic. There's no way that 2.0T engine can shear it below 5w30 over a normal OCI.

OK, but does this amount of shearing automatically result in some engine damage? Keep in mind, a typical UOA is not a good indicator of engine wear.

What I'm getting at is that some shearing is to be expected, and engine manufacturers are well aware of it, and already take it into account when specifying oil for your engine.

And I agree with the previous poster - if you're really worried, then run Xw-40 oil.

If you can get the specs, and as a rough and ready reckoner, divide the KV100 by the HTHS...lower number is (probably) more shear stable.

(Edge 5w30 in Oz is A3/B4, but your meets GF-5...pick Aussie Castrol EDGE for shear stability.)

Save yourself the headache and source something easily found on the road, ie Mobil 1 Extended Performance, Pennzoil Platinum / Pennzoil Ultra, etc... from Walmart. If you are this worried about it shearing, you are probably equally paranoid about it burning off and needed a top-off.

If you go the boutique route, make sure you stow a quart of 2 in the trunk jsut in case its needed.

German Castrol 0w30 or Mobil 1 0W40, both have a good HTHS viscosity for your application.

Long easy-going road trip? Mobil Super 5000 or Valvoline conventional -Low saps. Or, any of the oils mentioned thus far if syn is a must.
