I bought a new 05 Echo, changed the oil at 3000 km, with conventional oil, and am approaching 9000km, i am looking to swap to synthetic, what are people's opinions on how to reduce engine wear, the effects of cold starts, and any good/bad vibes on Royal purple synthetic oil (and what group would the 5w30 be?), and what is recommended for brand of oil filters, and how much wear is reduced by bypass filtering.
I have spent many hours searching through this site reading used oil analysis, VOAs, and debates of conventional vs synthetic, so please don't start the conventional vs syn debate in this thread
Thanks for all replies

Take a gander at this message thread:
What is Royal Purple made of???

You can get more info/opinions on Royal Purple if you do some searching in the archives. Personally, I think you'd be better off with Mobil 1 or Pennzoil Platinum, but that is just my opinion.

cold start wear is, IMHO, overrated.

You shall guard your engine with proper viscosity and with proper OCI, your Echo engine shall be able to last beyond 200,000kms easily.

If you change it regularly with a dino or stretch the OCI's with a synthetic makes little difference. Either way, as long as it's maintained, you'll probably trade the car off long before you have any engine problems.

I don't have much experience with Royal Purple, but I'm sure it's a good oil. However you'll probably not see much benefit from it unless you lengthen the OCI's. Otherwise a good quality conventional oil will server you just fine if you prefer to stay in the 3,000 to 5,000 mile range.

Royal Purple is a great oil. Kind of like Redline, you wont get the full benefit until you have ran it a few times in a row. It is pricey comparatively speaking. The OCI on RP would totally depend on how your UOA comes back. I'm sure some could run it 15k, easy while others seem to top out around 8k. The vibe from RP users is that they love RP and will use nothing else. I use it in my mazda6 and love it.

Congratulations on the Echo.
My friend Dave got one. It drove great, it rode way nicer than it should have for the size, and it could outcorner a squirrel.
Run Royal Purple if it makes you smile.
If you wind up broke, though, realize that your Yota' will do well on anything with API SL or API SM on the label and the right weight.

I'm with Quest on the "start up" wear. 90% of that 90% is unavoidable, imo.

Royal Purple oil is highly regarded by a few respected members here. Too rich for my blood given the quality of readily avaiable oils ....(cough-cough) and my wallet thickness.

Bypass filtration may alter that 10% of the leftovers of the unavoidable wear ..and the 10% of the avoidable wear. It will mainly, imo, have a far greater effect on the oil life. You're still looking at, assuming no design/manufacturing defects, probably a quarter million miles of service from a lubrication standpoint. With a bypass ...you'll have a much cleaner experience along the way.

Thanks for all your replies, but it seems that i am about at square 1, i am planning on running hte car till it dies (or gets totalled by an idiot driver, whichever comes 1st), and i pile on a lot of miles, which is why i am interested in engine life
i don't know where to get oil analyses' done in ontario canada, and just from vague memory, can you determine the type of composition of an oil (conventional or synthetic) by its flashpoints?
Thanks

so whats in this royal purple anyway?

Oil analysis in Ontario can be done through Wear Check Canada or through Toromont-CAT.

I don't have current pricing for Wear Check UOA kits, but if you send them an email I'm sure you would acquire it. Wear Check does have a nifty web interface suite for monitoring your used oil analysis. If you're not in the GTA you have to get the kits mailed to your door, and then pay for return mailing, which can add up a bit over time.

For Toromont-CAT click on the link at the top left "Branch Locator" to find the closest place to you for purchasing their UOA kits; their kits are a little below $18 before tax, which includes the return shipping to Toromont Labs in Orillia [I think it's in Orillia, the address is stamped on the outside of the 2nd bottle].

I can't comment on the quality of the one lab versus the other as I'm still waiting to get the Toromont-CAT UOA back.

If it were me, I would probably go with Mobil 1, or Castrol 0W30. Since you're in Ontario/Canada you could also attempt to get some Esso XD-3 0W30. When/if I get my Yaris, that's what I'll be doing, unless they spec it down to 5W20 in which case it'll be either Castrol Syntec or GTX 5W20, or the Mobil 1 5W20 for the duration of the warranty period.

Given the size of that little Echo.... you might want to make sure that you are not inside the car when it gets totaled.
