Not sure I agree about Subarus: None has ever been on my shopping list, just because of the odd horizantally opposed layout and mandatory 4wd. I have read that they are very reliable, though. I am tempted by the WRX wagon, but I don't really need turbo and 4wd complexity. I'm waiting for the Acura TSX diesel wagon 5spd.
Regarding fair pricing, I think one should never have to pay more than kbb.com trade-in price. And buy a car with complete service records or be a good judge of the previous owner.
