I've got no cats on my Grand Marquis, but Ford's put a resonator in place of the rear cats:

I asked a good exhaust shop to replace the resonators with a straight pipe, but the exhaust rattles like mad under load (anything past half throttle), because they used an el cheapo tin pipe.

Apart from the rattle, other changes were positive and I'd basically like to replace what the shop welded in with a quality straight pipe or a better flowing resonator. Just wondering if anyone has any recommendations.

The measurements, if of any interest, are:

Manifold to resonator
Circumference: 7.1"
Diameter: 2.26"
Length (top): 14.1"
Length (bottom): 16.2"

Resonator
Circumference: 11.2"
Diameter: 3.57"
Inlet: 2.26"
Outlet: 1.9"
Length: 10.6"

Resonator to H-Pipe
Circumference: 6.1"
Diameter: 1.9"
Length: 10.1"

I'm looking at an exhaust upgrade next year, when I will be going with Stainless Works long tube headers, offroad pipes and cat back. I don't want to revert to stock and put these the resonators back on, as the engine feels effortless on the highway, so I just want to get rid of the rattling for the time being. Thanks!

How about if you clamp down the old pipes, cut the resonators out, and weld in a new section of pipe, then bolt it back up in the car?

Yeah, this repair needs a quality exhaust guy.

I used to ask at car shows. I know your culture is different over there, but there must be a good muffler man somewhere!

Amazing, being able to have a newer vehicle without cat cons, and no EPA to impose fines if you defeat their mandated devices. Its like 1960 all over again!
Seriously though, thankfully there were emission mandates all these years, the air is way more clean than if it was left alone...imagine the vehicle population now with no emission standards? You wouldnt be able to see 10' in front of you or breathe with all the smog clouds.

Funny you mention this. Everytime I drive my 78 Jeep CJ I smell like fumes when I'm done and have a slight headache from the minimal emissions of that era.

The stock catback is H-Piped and the Stainless Works Catback is X'd. These pieces go between the manifold and the catback. Though it isnt really a catback since it has not cat, but those pipes would have the cats on the US variant.
I agree, you just need to find someone who can do it correctly.

Yes, my townie has an H, but I was thinking if he's getting it redone he might want to get the whole thing as one piece, as he has no cats to worry about. Was also no sure how that affected the whole "catback" thing we have going on over on this side of the pond vs his catless version over there.

He is working on it, but he needs the factory setup to work until he gets the funds. The SW catback is 11 bills and the Headers are 11-16 bills depending on if you want cats or ceramic coating.

Thanks for the input.

I asked a few technicians I know well, and they all recommended the same shop. If any exhaust work is needed on a customer's vehicle, they take the car to him. Apparently this guy's the man for "de-catting" and does high quality work. I'll be heading there soon.
