I have a VW 1.8T with 90K that does not consume oil. I usually use Lubro Moly 5w40 from NAPA or ELF Excellum 5w40.

I am currently looking at something to help with cold start noise and general overall quietness of the motor (the 1.8T is a noisy motor, has been since new). I am looking at:

Mobil1 0w40
Redline 5w40
RLI 5w40
GC 0w30 (if I can find it)

Thoughts? Typical driving is 75% city / 25% highway. Typical trip is my commute of 13-15miles in 25minutes.

While we can all give you our view points on what works best for us. You have to try a few brands untill you find what works good for you. Even if someone has great results with the same motor on one oil, it's not your motor so the results may differ.

With the exception of RLI, I have used every oil you posted. All of them are great. See what one you like best.

Maybe some Maxlife, if they make a 5w-40. Maybe you'd like to look at a truck 5w-40 like Rotella or another diesel oil that also meets API SM spec.

to BITOG!

I liked the Redline 0w30 for quietness and also RLI 0w30 / 5w20

cold start noises start around 45-50* and below. Just sounds a bit rough the first few minutes and it is not the secondary air pump/VVT stuffs.

I usually use a PureOne, Mobil1 or OEM filter. Usually one of the first two.

Are you sure it's oil related? Try some good fuel additive (Amsoil, Redline, Regane) ?

Could try Syntec 5w40, GC, or M1 0w40, just see if it changes the sound. Rotella T 5w40 is another (warning warning not a 502.00 oil)

Another very good oil for your engine would be Shell Rotella T6, 5W-40. Just do a search on the site for the high recommendations from people with diesel, gas engines and turbo's who use this Shell oil in everything from Mercedes to VW's. The Shell Rotella T6 is a full synthetic and has some outstanding characteristics and exceptional qualities in it's add pack.

edge 5w30 is real quite in my titan you mite try a diferant oil filter it took about 5 diferant oils until i found one that was quite

I have the same motor and have been using Rotella T6 5w40 for the last couple thousand miles. In my opinion, the motor is still noisy. However, it uses no oil at 96K and Rotella is regarded as a fine oil (not to mention readily available), so I will stick with it.

I am tempted to give Mobil, Castrol, Valvoline, Pennzoil, and Royal Purple a try to see if it noticeably quiets down the motor.

Not sure if I will take the plunge, though.

+1. I'll add PP to the list as well. Every engine is different so you might have to experiment a bit to find what works best for you.

I`d have to say Pennzoil yb. Every engine I`ve put it in always runs super smooth, responsive, and quiet. It always gives the best uoa`s,so that makes me believe that "quiet" oil is therefore lubricating better.

excuse my ignorance, but what is PP? Does BITOG have a acronym decoder sticky thread somewhere?
