So it seems my son is really wanting my wife's Tiguan. Made him a great deal and said I would continue the maintenance and upkeep on the exterior for him, except he would pay for parts (obviously). Interior is on him. He will return the GLI back to us and I still haven't decided if I want to drive that, or keep the wagon. Either one would not be driven much and kept as a second vehicle primarily. Made an appointment to go check out a few Mazda CX-90s at a local dealer. Not super familiar with trim and powertrain options, and will take one overnight to get momma's approval/disapproval. Neighbor has a Turbo Premium Sport and the wife really likes it (ridden in it several times, never driven it). If we pull the trigger, it will be our first non-VW in the past 15 years. We'll see.

From a safety standpoint I've been really impressed with the previous CX-9 so I'm sure the CX-90's are just as good.

I have its baby brother the cx30 turbo. Fun to drive and so far very reliable. The skyactive engines have been pretty reliable and it seems any kinks were worked out years ago. The 6 speed auto works pretty well and it seems that they worked out any bugs years ago. Some people don't like the feel of the auto transmission, it does keep the converter locked up until you get down to 7mph. Low speed driving can feel a little jerky, similar to driving a manual.

nah, get you an f450......

The CX-90 is one of the vehicles I will be considering to replace my CX-50 when the time comes. I think I would stick with the mild-hybrid with the 3.3L I6. But I also think the PHEV might be worth taking a little at too while you’re there and do the cost calculations for yourself on it.

May want to read up on the 90 and 70 before you even see if you like them. Mazda is having a lot of pains with hybrid batteries, extremely fast tire wear, transmissions, leaks, noises, you name it. I think the 90 and 70 are what made Mazdas quality or rankings plummet recently.

A buddy and I rented a CX-90 back in November. It was pretty awesome to the point that I am looking at one in the next year or two to replace our CR-V.

I've been shopping for them for the past couple months -- already a multiple Mazda owner (1993 Miata and 2015 Mazda6) but the reliability seems questionable.

I like the concept a lot -- it's basically a Mazda version of a BMW X5, which we have owned two of. But they've been having a lot of problems, especially the PHEVs but also the 6-cylinders. It has a brand new 6 cylinder engine, with a brand new 48v mild hybrid system, a brand new transmission with the motor-generator built into it, and brand new platform. The PHEV actually uses the same 2.5l 4-cylinder that's in our Mazda6, but with a very powerful hybrid system built around it. Lots of teething pains. They're also having a lot of problems with their factory tire suppliers. The 21-inch tires are wearing out within 20,000 miles. Who wants to pay that tire bill!

It's also an absolutely massive vehicle. It's a full foot longer than our 2012 X5 and some versions get up to 5,200 lbs IIRC. We would have to move some things around in our garage to get it to fit and be able to walk behind it.

We're still looking at them but leaning against it. I think I'd rather buy a late model CPO X5 with the B58 to be honest -- it might even be more reliable over time!!

OK, no CX-90. At least not the one we looked at/drove. Turns out it was the PHEV, and it had some issues. Like it had been in the service dept. for way too many visits for things dealing with the battery hybrid system. Service Manager told me that the owner basically got frustrated with it and took a bath on a trade. Wanted to Lemon Law it, but had different issues that wouldn't let it qualify or something along those lines according to him. Anyway, nice driving vehicle, and had a lot of nice features. But momma decided she likes VW better for various reasons. I do agree, it has less cargo space than the Atlas that she has hinted at. Guess we're off to local VW dealer next to see what she might like there. Again, stay tuned.

When the Atlas debuted I got auto journalist passes to the Denver Auto show. I was shocked that the third row had as much room as it did. Many suvs third row are little kid only.

I bet that service advisor was thanking his lucky starts that he was able to make a giant wad of cash on a trade, instead of take it back as a Lemon. I've read others who have successfully lemon-lawed their PHEVs.

I remember just reading in one of the leading car magazines on line about issues with the transmission that they really disliked and made driving it not enjoyable. Overall they didn't like quite a few things about it for long term ownership.I think it was a one year review with the big mazda.I would see if you can find that article

@cammyfive79 had a CX-90 for a while. His ownership review was not a glowing endorsement. Maybe things are better sorted now.

Have you considered a RX500h? 4-wheel steering, lots of power, surprisingly decent driving dynamics for a Toyota product...
