I just got done helping my friend change the oil on his 00 Dodge Durango and 88 Chevrolet Camaro. I know he neglects his oil changes worse than anyone i have ever seen and was amazed at the interavals on this change. The Durango oil was in it for a year and three months. He covered 16,000 miles in this time period and the oil was havoline 10w30 Conventional and a Mopar filter. The Camaro oil has been in it for over three years and 15,000 miles. He only changed it because we got a good deal on the new oil. Camaro had Valvoline conventional and a fram filter. Much to my amazement the oil on both cars aside from being black has night came out fine. No clumps, sludge, or metal that i could see. Even shined a flashlight down the filler to look inside best i could and they looked clean. So here's the question. I thought that long a drain on conventional would kill a car but i was wrong. So what the longest conventional (or synthetic, why not) drain you have done or seen and what was the results. Also anyone know round about when sludge would start to form. I know there are so many factors to that question that a answer likely doesn't exist. But never hurt to ask. Thanks for the input and i look forward to the stories and insight

Also both cars now have Valvoline and wix filters. FYI

From www.millionmilevan.com

" I used Valvoline 10W-40 motor oil and change it every 10,000 to 20,000 miles. The longest I’ve went between oil changes is 55,000 miles."

This was a Ford van with the 5.4L V-8 that went nearly 1.3 million miles before giving up.

IIRC the reason he went 55,000 miles was due to some oil consumption/leak problem.

Probably 11k miles on our Fit. That was about 9 months time-wise, using Mobil 1 0w-20. The light came on, I changed the oil with more M1. That car routinely goes 9-11k miles on an oil change. That engine has shown to be very easy on the oil, so it's not an issue for me.

Yeah, the oil wouldn't have had that many miles since new oil was being added all the time. Awful long time for a filter though, but I guess he didn't say that the filter wasn't changed between oil changes. Also, 1.3 million miles in 14 years means he was racking up nearly 100K per year. So, that 55K was likely put on in 6-7 months.

A little over 2 years in van or two that I owned over the years. No UOA, but not more than 4,000 miles, and it reached operating temps when I drove it.

A family friend went 28,000 on the initial fill on their early 90s Suburban. The oil got drained when the engine threw a rod. The wife thought the hubby was taking care of it. He assumed she was.........

Unfortunately I'm privvy to a 57k OCI...

My sister bought a brand new 0 mi. Hyundai Tiburon some years back. I had to borrow it for one reason or another and thought I'd be nice and detail/service it for her. I called and asked her when her last oil change was (because I had some of her grade in my stash) and if she had a brand preference...

Her answers? ...hurt my head. Soooo yeah, 57k on factory fill.

Hard to believe without serious top off along the way.

More info please! Pics?

Had a neighbor gal (now moved) who drove an older Corolla and the few years here, she didn't change oil. Just add when needed.
That car was such an eye sore, abused, terrible shape, but she kept driving all over locally and didn't baby it at all.
Used a lot of stickers to hide rust, hold tail light cover on, bungee cord to hold trunk etc etc etc.
What a piece a junk it was, and I was surprised, shocked that is would run by the time she moved. Had no grill, headlight wired on, cracked glass and so much junk and stink inside. etc etc.
Looked like she was living in it and kept fast food garbage all over in it mixed with dirty clothes. Just nasty.

Sounds like you have a crush on her.

Ironically enough, I don't think it was more than a quart low. I do wish I would have thought to pull the valve cover and take some pictures, but that was long before my BITOG days.

Sorry no further info... She did however own it past the 100k mark. No clue on what became of it.

+1 Probably didnt. Those 4.3s are indestructable

I did a 2.5 yr interval on the 98 Camaro. PP. 3k miles. The OA came out with a bit of high iron. Otherwise, just fine.

I did 2 yr interval on the truck this weekend. 3.5k miles. PP. Looked pretty bad. Put in Mobil 1 0w30 for the next two years.

This is quoted from the http://www.millionmilevan.com/ website:

"I used Valvoline 10W-40 motor oil and change it every 10,000 to 20,000 miles. The longest I’ve went between oil changes is 55,000 miles. It used a quart of oil or more every tank of gas. I usually waited for the oil to turn black before changing it."

A quart every tank! I wonder how many miles were on the vehicle when that started?
