I am looking to use a longer filter for my brand new 2010 Dodge Charger 5.7L Hemi. Currently, Wix calls for the 57899, which is 3.740" Height, 3.675" Outer Diameter Top, with a thread size of 22x1.5 MM 6-H

I would like to go to a Wix 51087 which is 5.477" Height, 3.661" Outer Diameter Top, with a thread size of 22x1.5 MM

The gaskets, By-Pass Valve Settings, Anti-Drain Back Valve, etc., settings are virtually the same for both filters

Bottom line, what is the difference between the 22x1.5 MM 6H and the 22.1.5 MM without the 6H???

Will the 51087 work for my application????
Thanks!

Since you have a warranty on that new vehicle, I'd make sure you use what Wix calls out in their catalog just in case..

I thought of that but Chrysler's Warranty division says "WIX/NAPA" is on their "approved" filter list and any filter I use that fits the application would not void the warranty. Comes under the Moss-Ferguson Act.
One of the "unapproved" filters is FRAM, they have had too many failures/problems with FRAM and reccommend against using them.

No I'm sure that the WIX would be fine. Just make sure that the one you use is the one they call out for on their app list.

Did that make any sense?

Interesting on the Frams... Did not know that.

Sure, normally does make sense, however....
The proper capacity for oil change with filter is supposed to be 7 quarts. That takes the oil level to the bottom of the "safe" etching on the oil dipstick. Add another quart and that takes the oil to over the "FULL" line. 7.5 Quarts takes it to about 3/4 way through the safe area, not to the full line. In theory, a longer filter, about 1.5" longer, should take the oil level to the top of the safe area, at the FULL line using eight quarts if my calculations are correct.

No, does have MDS though and larger filter doesn't matter with MDS but viscosity does. You MUST use 5W20 on this car.

6H is the 'medium' tolerance for an internal metric thread. The absence of any thread standard defaults to the 'medium' tolerance.

If thread tolerance class designation (i.e., '-6H') is omitted, it defaults to 'medium' thread tolerance which is 6H/6g (internal/external). The 6H/6g fit is the standard ISO tolerance class for general use.

So in this case the difference between the 22x1.5 MM 6H and the 22.1.5 MM without the 6H is that one is shorter to write. They both define the same thread & tolerance class.

Sooo....22x1.5 MM 6H and 22x1.5MM are exactly the same and interchangable???

No, looked at that. All the 2008 - 2010 Trucks and SRT-8's are specifying the same filter. I learned the hard way...my 2007 Dodge Charger Super Bee SRT-8 takes a 3/4-16 thread filter so I use the WIX 1773 to add another quart to the system. Can't use those filters on the newer hemi's because of the thread difference :-(

Note that WIX have a separate and large base-end bypass and will displace room for extra media. Also, this is a small block V8 whats the worry? Oil should be flowing like Niagra through the stock unit.

Yes, which is exactly what I meant by:

22x1.5 & 22x1.5-6H both define the exact same internal threads.

Well they don't list the BETA's for either of those filters, but the nominal micron rating is 21 for the 57899 and 25 for the 51087.
In this case, the smaller filter actually filters better by the looks of things. 51372 is in between those 2 in size and lists a nominal of 21 with a BETA of 2/20=12/25.

I'm not sure the MFA covers you using the incorrect equipment. Just because you can physically thread a filter onto the adapter, that doesn't mean that it's the correct filter. If the filter P/N you have on the engine is not listed for that engine, that's just something else you'd have to explain away if something unlikely ever happened.

n3fvg, although WIX may be on the "approved aftermarket vendor" list, if the WIX filter you chose doesn't DIRECTLY cross to the Mopar filter listed in the owner's manual, you are taking a risk. If Chrysler wants to, they can deny coverage for that very reason. It's always better to err on the side of caution while the vehicle is still under warranty, unless you're willing to foot the bill for any repairs...then rock on with your bad self.

BTW, it's the Magnuson-Moss Act...I think Moss-Ferguson is a brand of lawnmower.

Thank you very much! I guess they put the 6-H designation on the one filter to scare you into using just that one!
