Linux at home, not Ubuntu

I have an older laptop which has been upgraded to 11.10 Ubuntu. I've found out that this is no good... when I click on something the machine now takes about 5 seconds to respond.

Likewise, I have a desktop running Ubuntu. As I've tried to upgrade each of these machines, dealing with the bugs in connecting to wireless has tried my patience. It seems that I can't get any one setup to work for any length of time (or after the next reboot).

I have other machines. Macs. No problem there. I have the ability to experiment with the two Linux machines. I'm not a novice, but I'm not an expert either. I just want something secure, stable, and reasonably easy to use. I want my wireless to work, lol...

Try Fedora.

Wow, I didn't know Fedora was affiliated with Red Hat. I use Red Hat at work. I'll try it.

On a newer computer the new Ubuntu is a great operating system. I put it on a new system with a 29 dollar AMD processor and 4gb of ram and it screams.

I have had a bunch of compatibility issues with older computers, especially nvidia cards with the new version of ubuntu.

Try another distribution that will support the older hardware better.

Dammed Small Linux + Fluxbox if you want an older system to scream. Dammed Small Linux developer has moved on to other projects so its frozen in time and should allow your wireless to continue to work once its up.

Try Lubuntu. It's Ubunto with a light weight screen manager and lighter weight apps. It runs good on my 11 year old Sony laptop.

I think you can convert Ubuntu to Lubuntu without reloading everything. This looks like it tells how to do it

Lubutu should give you much faster response, but prolly won't help with your wifi problems. You might find a solution by googling your wifi card name plus ubuntu

CentOS is another option, if you're want Red Hat but won't want to pay for it.

Thanks for the responses. The laptop is old but not ancient. Perhaps 2004 vintage. The desktop is around 2009 vintage, but was extremely bare bones out the door. I'm going to try Fedora and see how it goes.

If fedora doesn't work for you, give xubuntu or puppy a shot.

This post is coming at you from an old Puppy box. Binary compatible with Ubuntu .debs, so package availability is no problem.

I would Install Lubuntu and if you are not happy with it then Xubuntu. Using Package Manger you can install either without doing a clean install.

After entering your password before hitting enter look down at the bottom of the screen and change it to boot to the new desktop. It will remember whichever you choose on the next boot.
