One of the things my house is going to need is light fixtures. 3 for the bedrooms, and one for the living room. The house does not have A/C (and will not until next year). So, I've been thinking..for a guy on budget:

Should I go with a mix of ones with fans, and the others plain ones? I'm not sure of future decor, so I need to find ones to match pretty much everything....

And where is a good place to buy them? Any places with good deals on them?

Thanks!

Ceiling fans with lamps are a great idea, even if you have A/C. Home Depot or Lowe's are good sources.

Lowes and home depot are great choices. I would like to suggest also going to a couple different lowes and home depots as they seem to have a little a little less selection between different stores. Also as a FYI they are in the process of building a menards pretty much the same thing slightly different selection though in belleville, and I cant wait lol.

I would also recommend checking out Menards and Fleet Farm for ceiling fixtures, both in my area have a wide variety of styles and price points, and I also agree with Stxonall8 on checking multiple stores before making a decision.

Belleville? I thought is was going to be Livonia. Maybe both!

can't wait either...will be too late for the fixtures there, unless I road trip to Jackson...

Our local community has a Habitat for Humanity "Restore". They get all sorts of new (and used) fixtures, building supplies, almost anything. They sell it at really good prices and proceedes go the H-F-H. I've scored three new premium ceiling fans with lights for about the cost of 1&1/2. Downside is, of course, no warranty.

There is also a Menards off I-69 just west of Flint... not sure which city off the top of my head. Belleville is still more than a half hour from me, but I'm glad I'll have a relatively close Menards to visit

I'll have to group it in with my trips to Ikea in Canton.

Keep in mind that if you only have 8' ceilings, then a large ceiling fan with a tall light fixture will not only make the ceiling look low, it can easily be low enough for someone 6' or taller to be uncomfortable walking under it.

If your ceilings are low, get a ceiling hugger fan; if you get a fan with a light fixture get a light fixture that doesn't hang way down. It will not only make the room feel larger and taller, but it will be more comfortable for anyone of reasonable height walking under it.

If your ceilings are taller than 8' then you have some additional options. Assuming you'll want to sell the house in a few short years, keep the look as vanilla as possible to appeal to a wider range of future buyers.

"They" say the old 1980s ceiling fans are way better than the ones they make now. Heavier motors etc.

It's always good to prowl the clearance aisles at HD and lowes for lights. Try a couple different stores. Fashions are always changing. Agree on the used route as well. What's your time frame? Maybe get some $9 cheapo thing now to get by. HD and Lowes seem to have "high fashion" stuff with planned obsolescence, brushed weathered copper seems to be the current fad. My dream is to find a real antique antique with style then rewire it if necessary.

I got some stained glass upward facing wall sconces off ebay some time ago. Wanted to run CFLs and they were one of a few options at the time that had full size edison bases.

Now they make 13 watt (60 watt equiv) curly-fry lights with candelabra/ nightlight bottoms. Put out a lot of light from some cute fixtures without the heat to wreck them.

Never thought about that. Good point!

I was thinking a few cheaper ones to start out...and maybe try to get a fan too. Not looking for fancy, just simple ones to get us going.

Yes, ceiling fans with a light fixture are a good way to go and can save on cooling costs. Lowes and Home Depot probably have the best prices and range of styles. We use ours a lot here in Phoenix and we went with the less expensive fans and light kits and they serve us just fine.
