Ok life change going from a long commute of an hour drive in my 6.7 Cummins to a 17 mile one way commute. My truck is my daily driver. Is my new commute now a short trip and will it cause harm in the long term. I don’t Idle my engine I mainly use 5W40 the factory viscosity since day one. A long with archoil regularly.

I have had a similar commute for as long as I have had my 22’ Ram Cummins and so far it’s still doing fine. Im retired so it doesn’t make the trip every day but at least twice a year we take it out for a long towing trip for a week or two and also use the Archoil.

Thanks for all the info it’s good to know getting ready to retire in a few years and am not buying a new truck anytime soon probably after I pass on then maybe.

24 cummins and a 15 mile highway commute. I have a CTS3 monitor, and my EGT2 and EGT3 PIDs monitored.

Truck gets up to temp fine, and EGTs get up into the high 700s, which is fine for a passive regen.

IMO its just fine. Oil samples well too.

17 highway miles won't be enough time to get to operating temperature and perform a regen and interrupted regens aren't really a great thing.

Your oil will spend most of its life below temperatures needed to drive off water/fuel.

I have a non-walkable 3 mile commute. I was excited about it until I realized that a short commute isn't great for your vehicle. I chnage my oil on a 2500-3000 mile range (about 6 months) and get it good and hot on the weekends.

I will just drive up and over lookout pass on my way home it’s an extra 45 minutes of entering the horseshoe mountains.

I remember someone once posting that it takes nine miles for the oil to get up to temperature, longer than it takes coolant to get up to temperature.

Took a pic this morning. I drove 6 miles in 12 minutes (had to run an errand). No highway driving, speed between 25-60 mph. A few stop signs and red lights. Here are the temps. If I had been on the highway, like my work commute, it would’ve been even warmer. Hope this helps.

yikes ! if possible I would walk that.

Agreed. In my area I wouldn't even consider starting a vehicle for a 1/4 mile commute. I walk longer than that on my afternoon lunch break.

In his area it's not really practical for a variety of reasons, even ignoring his need to tote a pile of gear.
