Bought our LG BD550 back in May/June of 2010 build date is Apr 2010 and already dead! Won't play any blu rays or dvd's. Tried cleaning it and updating firmware still nothing. Not happy about it as it's really hasn't been used maybe 1 or 2 discs a week, alot of times less than 1 every couple weeks. Most of our old DVD players at least lasted 3 years. So in for the market for a new player looking at Samsung as in general we have good luck with anything Samsung.. Sharp is another. Vizio seems to have terrible reviews.

Samgsung and Panasonic are pretty reliable brands.
I would bet that most DVD/Blu Ray players are made in China today.
The better brand names give you some hope of reasonable quality, but even that is no promise, the problem is the shoddy Chinese manufacturing, and questionable business practices that are a daily fact of life there.

Our 3 year old Samsung LN-T4071F was a great TV. Yesterday it went "bonkers" and turned it on and off and finally turned off for good. I have been reading up on some Samsung products having capacitor failures. Just research you model well, and it saved us to have bought the extended warranty, so you may want to think about that regardless of what brand you buy.
We have had a Sony 40" TV/Monitor for 5+ years and have had no issues whatsoever. I'd buy another Sony in a heartbeat.

Especially if it is walmart or other similar "extreme price pressure" models, that often have their own part number.
I just dont trust them. Too complex, too much to go wrong, and too unwieldy to fix after.

You have the same player that is sold at Walmart. If they sell it at Walmart, period, then you know it's junk.

Every Company is going to have a few bad pieces....
LG and Samsung has the biggest market share in the US (I think). Of course, you'll find more of them in repair shops.

I actually have 3 LG LCD TV's. Got an exceptional price for the package. Great pictures. The sound on one is a bit funky. Probably within specification, though.

I don't like Samsung or LG, although I can't say Samsung flat screen tvs have been too bad in my experience. I prefer Sony and Motorola. All the Smasung, LG and similar cell phones seem to have horrible voice sound quality. It sounds a lot like 2 tin cans and a string. As far as I'm concerned I'd have no use for anything coming from China, S. Korea or even Japan and Asia in general but it's not like you have much choice in the matter.

Never bought a Sony since I worked on a few of their computers. Never cared for Sony and propriety setups.

I have been buying the best buy brand name of electronics recently. Insignia or Dynex. Yes it is junk, but it is cheap junk and I won't mind throwing it out in a couple years.

We bought the player at Bestbuy figured what they offered would be better versus Walmart. Guess I was wrong. I will say you're probably right about Samsung's. Our current Samsung cell phones are the worst we've had. Normally don't have a problem with their cell's. Not sure what we're going to get yet.. Sam's has a Sharp blu ray and the Sharp Aquos 42 inch we've had since 2007 besides the normal lines haven't had any issues.
LG's stong suit is panel manufacturing. There LCD panels from 3 or 4 years ago were considered some of the best. Have not been in the market for a set lately, so have not been comparing.
BTW Samsung is covering their faulty motherboards for out of warranty situations. Call Samsung direct and be nice and they will cover it. All you have to do is, be polite and let them know that you are aware of the many problems. A co-worker recently had his motherboard replaced free of charge parts and labor, on his 46" LCD 1080p.(one of the most troubleprone models) His set was 3 years old when his went out.
