LG compressor replacement experience

My wife and I were in the market for a new French-door fridge a few months ago. At Lowe's one of the employees told us to stay away from LG and Samsung because they are prone to trouble, and it's difficult to find service for them. We ended up with a Whirlpool. The first one was noisy, so we had them replace it with another one. It sucks how the quality of appliances seems to have dropped as they have become more energy efficient and added more features. However, it's good to know the LG refrigerators can at least be serviced.

Rotalock fittings have been used on some compressors in air conditioners/heat pumps for a while now. Makes sense that they'd use something similar in refrigerators.

because we live in a huge metro area, i can't say how service is in other places , but the tech that came was a LG employee and not third party. I asked him how many compressors he changes daily and he said he only changes 2-3 a week . i bet LG has literally sold millions of them ,so even if a small percentage go bad, its still a large number.

i just talked to my sister and asked her how the fridge is working. she said its back to normal .

my sister bought a home a couple of years ago that has an LG refig . last week it it stopped cooling. i went to check it out and told them its probably the compressor. according to the serial number its a 2018 model. They were about to just buy a new one when with a little digging we found out that LG had extended the warranty.

So yesterday morning she got on the chat with LG . they asked her a few questions and without much fuss told her they would send a tech out today. the tech came and i went over to watch. it as pretty much how its done on you tube vids, but instead of brazing he use some kind of crimp connection i have never seen before. he said they use this as the new refrig use butane as its coolant and boom boom is no beuno.

after crimping all the connection he did a leak test and then pulled a vacuum . he then recharged from a pre measured tube. no need to weigh or lug around a tank . he was in and out in about an hour.

i always thought about tackling a job like this, but i hate brazing or soldering , but with those connections no flame needed. the rest was pretty much like doing a car .

i must give kudos to LG for how they handled this.
The labor is not included in the 2018 warranty. What did your sister pay for labor? It is also heavily reported by LG owners that the replacement linear compressors continue to fail.

My brother had his replaced in his 2018 LG, labor was covered but it failed again 3 years later. Replaced it with a GE.

My dad was smart and just bought a new refrigerator when his LG compressor failed, replaced with a Whirlpool.

Then there are the LG TVs we had that died at the 3 year mark....3 years seems to be the limit for LG products.

Lucky, your sister!
I've read that when out of warranty, LG in particular gives the mantra....it's on back order and we have
no idea when it will be available. So much so that an investigation was launched in the US to see if this
was a ploy to sell new one instead. Don't know the results of that investigation.

Nothing . Gave the tech a $20 tip for lunch. i talked to him for a few minutes and he said he does TV repair also . said most issues are the screens and he just replaces the whole screen instead of messing with individual LED

2018 warranty on LG refrigerator compressor is five years parts and labor. 10 years on compressor with no labor.

Previously in earlier years before 2018 it was one year labor that was settled in a class action lawsuit and LG adhered to that settlement in aces and spades.

Much information on it if you do a search for LG compressor replacement settlement that covers the years 2017 and earlier. Everybody who applied was reimbursed from $450 if you had no documentation and no receipts to 1000s of dollars.

All this information is available on a search but since we’re talking about 2018 here’s the information.

running but not cooling. what part inside is failing. The reed valve? Gee they have known how to make steel that can last for 50 years in reed valves, Moms old Frigidaire from the late 1960's is still running.
