LED lights

Yes, I see many as well. I like to tell customers when buying Led bulbs/fixtures. On the packaging, "The big print giveth, and the small print taketh away." They always have a cuckle!

... And you don’t just change bulbs in these. You have to change the entire lighting unit.
You answered your own question right there. Could be several hundred to a grand to replace some of these stupid things.

I'd assume they are expensive to replace... that said, I don't think I've seen many? I did see a couple of cars today minus a headlight--but all of them had recent run-ins with immovable objects.

I just learned this. My wife said she wanted brighter headlights. I looked for bulbs for her 2020 RAV4 but no one sold them. It puzzled me, why. Then I realized the LED lamp was built into the lighting unit and cost several hundred dollars.

I don't fully understand the direction manufacturers went with this. Bulbs lasted a long time and were far more consumer friendly. Is this a marketing/design choice or are LEDs cheaper to produce or assemble?

Consumer friendly is not a concern.

Consumers wanted “pretty LEDs” and they just so happened to be cheaper to make.

Win-win for them, lose-lose for us.

When I bought my 2007 ram diesel with standard halogen bulbs. Well the headlights were clear, so it was an upgrade from the other style headlights, but I NEVER had any issues seeing anything, until everyone started blinding the heck out of me with their lights. If we took the overall brightness down a few notches, everyone could see better. There is no need for uncoming traffic to the blinded for 200ft until the car passes

I don’t see burned out headlights on the ones with LED lights, except for Teslas. Only ones with halogen bulbs. And I drive at night across town most days.

I see them all the time. People run the brights, so they still have two functioning headlights even thought one is bright and the other isn't. I just assume they're aftermarket lights that someone added onto an older vehicle and also aren't aimed properly.
