Leaking transmission?

I looked under my car today and I saw that my Transmission pan around the front is dripping with oil(soaked not really drip drip). Upon further inspection I opened my hood and looked at from there and it looks all greasy. I see there is a line or hose that connects to the radiator, and the end of the hose that connects to transmission looks all greasy and filthy from debris that sits on the top of the oil. Its literally all over the the end of the line and nozzle or whatever its called.

When I drive I feel no problems. It was just a hunch to look under my car and I saw this. Does the pan need tightening? what about the hose that connect the radiator and transmission. It all over the parts where they connect not really the hose!
I have no mechanic experience, what could this be due to?

degrease it all and recheck to pinpoint the source. also keep a eye on your transmission fluid. Automatics really dont take going low very well.

Any type of degreaser i should buy specifically? I got a feeling just using sone old rags wont really clean this stuff clean enough!


ALso, is it normal for a car to take like 2 -3 seconds to start? it cranks for a while then starts. Is this the starter?

Spray degreaseron it and with the engine running was it all off at the car fash. I would recomend a most power LED flashlight you have because black oil running down a black painted block can be hard to see until it drips.

I had a 93 Sentra that leaked where the trans cooler line went into the radiator. AMMCO replaced it with rubber hose and some clamps when they changed the transmission fluid. I had to replace it later. In between I would tighten the hose clamps if it was leaking. Finally, I put an extra clamp where it tended to leak and the problem was solved.

When you say "oil" what color is it? Transmission fluid is red color when new, but can become brown when too old. It is possible your transmission pan gasket needs the bolts tightened. Word of caution. I dropped the transmission pan on my Sentra and cleaned the magnets. I had a new torque wrench and overtorqued a pan bolt and sheared off the head. So, I follow the advice of my mechanic and snug those bolts. I also have an inch pound torque wrench now that is much more accurate for light torque applications.

Not sure about your Nissan but my Sentra engine was the leakiest engine I have ever owned. Front crank seal, pan gasket, valve cover gasket, and tube seals were replaced at least once. Ran great though.

What year is your Maxima? It's a possible failing starter or weakening battery issue.

4th gen Maxima (1995-1999) have a tendency for starters to fail after the 130k mile mark.

Check/Test your battery and starter.

could be a lot of things start by checking fuel pressure after sitting for a few hours see if the fuel leaks past the check valve
