Leaking Ford Taurus PTU, clogged vent

Hi all. 2015 Taurus Police AWD. I noticed my PTU was pretty wet with gear oil in the seal area where it meets the driveshaft.

I took off my PTU vent/breather and discovered it's totally clogged. Tried to blow air thru it and it was 100% not letting anything thru.

Could this be why it is leaking so badly?

Could this have damaged any seals or vent tubing?

What should I replace it with? The Ford design is pretty bad, I was wondering if there are any small breather filters people used.

Thanks.

That seal is prone to leaking if original design. If the vent is plugged it will build up pressure and definitely cause the seal to leak. Have you serviced the PTU? The lube they use is 75-140 synthetic and the proximity of the cat to the PTU will turn that lube to sludge if not serviced. I have serviced the PTU three times in my 2015 Edge AWD. It only holds a few ounces.

I fill my injector tool with 20 oz. 2 gets lost in the hose going into the ptu drain hole, and 2 more gets drained while hurrying to put the plug back in. That leaves the perfect 16oz in there. It should never fall below 14oz.

I would use a motorcycle crankcase vent end. I think uni makes it.

Yes if the vent gets plugged it will leak.

I service mine every 5k as it has 200k on it, and i want it to last. 15K is the max you should go.

@40Deluxe

Thanks guys.

Just drained it, only got out about 9 to 10 oz.... Just had it changed 5k miles ago! For sure a leak out of the rear seal, I'm gonna refill it and replace the clogged vent/filter and check back in in a few hundred miles.

I am going to put 18 oz in it. I have an extended vent tube that I can use to fill it, although slowly. The car was sitting for days, that's all that came out of the drain plug...
