Just a quick FYI post. I have a 3 year old Poulan snow blower. Its a stripper model Husqvarna, 30 inch width and 291cc LCT engine. I found this summer/fall that there was some oil leaking at the front of the engine (pulley side). Appeared to be quite a slow leak as the crankcase was almost full. Couldnt see any obvious leaks on the sides or crank seal. Did some research and found some sort of recall on the 414cc engines that had a casting/machining defect on the crankcase cover. The bottom ends were not very precise and allowed oil to leak passed the gasket. there was no info on any other size engine by the way.

I split the machine and was able to raise the crankcase cover up a small amount and sealed the end surfaces with rtv. I buttoned it back up and now appears the issue is resolved.

Just in case anyone running these engines comes across mystery oil leaks. While the fix was annoying to have to perform, it was quite easy and took me an hour to get the thing all done.

Good find and fix Brian. Just for clarification, you moved the cover that houses the crank seal?

I unbolted the cover, which does house the crank seal and raised it approx. 1/2 an inch, which is when the seal contacted the pullies.
