Layer at bottom of oil bottle?

I did a change a few days ago and used all my odd bottles of oil laying around. They had been hanging around for a while. One bottle was dated 2006, two from 2008 and 2 litres left from the last change - although this bottle was dated 2009.
The question is at the bottom of the 2006 & 2008 bottles there was a layer of white 'sludge'. I am guessing this was the additive settled out of the oil? I added a little oil and with a bit of shaking it mixed in. Is this 'normal' for oils sitting this long (bottles where unopened), and should I be worried? Is shaking it back in enough or should I be changing it out ASAP.

It happens. I always turn the bottle or jug upside down and shake well no matter how old the container is before pouring.

Good, thanks for the reply, gives me a bit of piece of mind. Will be mixing all my bottles before I use them from now on.

Do you really want an oil in your engine that has already separated before it has been used? That is just my thoughts .....

That was my original thoughts, that's why I wanted some other thoughts. How much is just settling and and how much 'separation' (for use of a better word)?

Oil being a natural type of fluid, it makes sense that there is some settling. It's not like it broke down chemically.

OP, post a used oil analysis of your backyard special blend.

I shake any oil before I put it in my car, whether its 5 months old or 2 years old.

Just because an oil settles out does not make it bad to use, like Artem said, it is a natural based fluid mixed with additives and it will settle out over time.

Don't know if I'll get to do a used oil analysis. There expense here in OZ.

I too have shaken up the oil bottles(in the upsidedown position) prior to adding them in the engine.

If an oil is not capable of suspending its own add pack for very long how clean would it keep the engine? I shake too, but have a look first.

Shake and pour. Over they years I've found it happens with some oils, not all. As a result I got into the habit of shaking up oil before pouring it in.

I`ve only seen it happen with dinos,all dinos,and only after the bottle/jug has been opened. I`d wondered if maybe it`s some kind`ve chemical reaction when the sealed oil comes in contact with the open air.

wondering a bit about this myself lately, as i have a 16 oz water bottle full of Nextgen 5w20, setting on a shelf (leftovers from last OC) bottle previously only had "purified water" in it. oil put into this container on 01/01/12.

Car takes 4.5 qts, next OC will prolly be this w/ 4 qts Pennzoil Conventional 5w20, now the question is to change out the k&n filter, or do a drain & re-use..

What your seeing in that picture is the oil picking up the last bit of water and settling to the bottom.
