Sarge I couldn't even see it from my computer at work and the screen shot is a little tough to read on my home computer. Could you just type it in?

Seems like an unremarkable typical oil. I was thinking of switching from my 5w30 Mobil 1 T&S which is $$$ but gives me excellent UOA over 121,000 miles.

Well, I don't judge an oil buy a VOA, but it does look weak. Maybe they are using esters?? For the $$, Amsoil has the best additive package right now IMO. (ASM/ASL/ATM)

3,000+ppm Ca
270ppm of Boron
65ppm of Moly

That seems like an awefully high TBN for this oil....that puts it higher than Amsoil's XL line....I didn't think platinun was a 'long-life' oil.....

I suspect you are correct Buster...esters....

I can buy the Platinum for $2.88 per quart(BOGOF).
I believe the Amsoil numbers you put up are the 15K ASL. That's about $7.88 per quart.

There's about a $5 per quart price difference there. There are some very good 8-10K Platinum OCIs/used oil analysis here. If you want to pay $5 more per quart -- go right ahead!

I agree...10.2 is high...as you can see Blackstone also commented on the TBN.

777, it's hard to argue with you. I pay about $5.75qt but that doesn't include shipping/$20 PC discount.

I think the case of 12 came to $80. $6.66qt for ASL.

Buster

No doubt Amsoil is a overall better oil. Good luck with your 0W-20 venture with it. Hope all your underneath your vehicles trips get cut in half - just what you're seeking.

Terry has posted that they are using an advanced and different add pack with this oil. I'm betting that the calcium is being used as an AW additive so others are not needed like the boron. Would explain the high TBN.

True, but that is not new. Mobil was using over based calcium/boron as an anti-wear additive for awhile now. I'm sure the new part of what Terry was saying is not seen via a $20 VOA. .02

$35 Buster...$35

And I totally agree....we are not seeing the real story with this VOA....I suspect Terry is bound by NDA's and the such and probably cannot comment....

While these Virgin samples are fun to play with, I can tell you that there is a sweat, love and thought that goes into oil blending/production than you will not see on a basic lab analysis.

To compare two oils and say, "This one has more boron, Calcium, Moly, etc.- so it must be better" really discounts the behind-the-locked-doors work that chemists/fluid eng. labour over.

If it was as easy as simply sprinkling some basic elements into a well known groupIII/IV/V oil, don't you think that everyone would be doing that? Think of all the millions that could be saved be not building research centres or paying guys like me to devote a lifetime to the study of fluids and how they interact with their surrounding enviroments.

As an aside, my personal belief is that some companies (cough,Amsoil, cough) knowingly blend their oils the way they do, because they know you guys will shell out for the elemental tests, and then get all exctied when you see the basic elements that you are looking for: "Look! Lots of zinc! This oil is going to make my engine last forever!" Not to single Amsoil out, but its clear they know what you guys are up too.

At the end of the day, the things that make an oil really "work" and stand out from its peers, are not the things that you are going to see on any Blackstone labs tests.

If it was that easy, all oils would look and act the same.
