larger oil filter for Honda

Purolator L24458, the best Honda oil filter for $2.49 at Pepboys. This is the biggest oil filter you can fit on a Civic.

1992 Honda Civic LX 1.5L. I want a bigger oil filter for it, but I don't know where to cross-reference my OEM specs to a bigger filter.

Any ideas on what filter I can use that is bigger?

I have good news (with a twist) and bad news. The bad news is that it looks like the 24458 is being discontinued. The good news is, if you have the room and the gasket isn't too big, you can go even bigger. I've got a Subaru that I was using the 24458 on, but wanted to go even bigger. I was at advanced auto and they had both the cheap purolator and the expensive pureone in the 24458 size.
Wix(and its clones) have the 51344 size.

Where did you get the info that this filter was being discontinued?

There are a couple great tools from Purolator's web site http://www.pureoil.com/. Just click on the previous link and click on "vehicle applications" at the top. Other filter manufacturer websites may have similar tools. I have found that a bigger engine on the same model can sometimes have a larger filter that will fit the smaller engine. Just check the thread size and filter width. Good luck.

I went to NAPA today(cause there is no Pep Boys in Greenville, TX.) and picked up the Gold 1344.

I am logging all suggestions (filter sizes) for use and evaluation in the future, so I thank you guys very much for the info.

unDummy, on the Purolator website, if you look up a car that would normally take the 24458, (the 1990 Probe for instance), they're now recommending a 14459 OR the 24458 (was just 24458 before) and say of the 24458 that "Availability limited to existing inventory". Our local Meijer stores have been out of them for a few weeks now.

Looks like I'll have to convert the rest of the Subaru fleet to use the 20195 with that Chrysler adapter thingy I found

Some filters are junk. Some have more substantial construction. Some have finer filtering capabilities. Those who seek larger filters for the same application want all three ..better holding capacity, finer capture numbers (better Beta #), and they don't want to stress the media while doing it ...and just in case ..want what's considered the best constructed filter.

It's a multilayered concept going on here.

I was in Meijers looking at the clearance filters and looking throught the Purolator application book and saw the Sonoma with a V6 took a purolator 20411 or 24011 or something like that and my 4 banger takes a 10111 so I took one of each off the shelf and one is longer than the other and the gaskets and threads looked right so I looked in the book and it said they are both the same diameter and thread and flow per minute so if I have the clearance room wouldn't it be wise to use the larger filter. Is there a web site or something showing ALL the filters that can be used on a vehicle if you have the room because the threads and gasket are the same as a smaller filter.

That's the million $$$ question. Everyone here would LOVE a utility that you could just punch in your engine and it would automaticall puke out all the available filters in your gasket size (with a +/- factor) and can diameter in a simple format.

The best I've come up with is the Donaldson site. Where you can at least punch in your thread size and it gives you all the filters that have it. But you may get 500 hits since EVERYTHING that has the thread size in it will show up. You then go through all the listings that are for lube filters ..and then you have to look at each one (all are marked "lube spin-on" and you usually only get 30 hits that are actually filters) and see the can and gasket size.

This would be great if someone put this together.

Perhaps we can get one of the mods to provide a "sticky" that is composed of all the "known" (IE proven) combos that work

It can be compiled like the achonym sticky.

This could be a lot of work timewise ..but would probably pay off in spades in ultimate band width savings due to all the posts looking for alternate filters.
