I was visiting my parents this Memorial Weekend who live on a lake. One moring I was going to take the boat out for a spin and popped the engine cover to check the oil and saw a big orange can staring at me. A PH30 to be exact. The boat is a 1984 and dad thinks that PH30's have been used as long as he can remember.

Being a BITOG enthusiast, I wondered if there was a larger oil filter out there that dad could use. Mainly because I've always thought that this boat's oil pressure was a little high for a given throttle setting....cold or hot. Then again, that engine has been performing without hiccup since 1984!

I just was wondering if a larger oil filter would ease that pressure back a little. I believe that the PH30 has a 13/16-16 thread and has bo bypass.

What is the largest non-bypass filter that would fit. Length of filter will not be an issue as there's at least a foot clearance.

Also, would using a filter with a bypass be a bad thing? I think I could see the downside as the engine uses only a metal strainer instead of a air filter and you'd want every drop of oil to be forced through the oil filter to get all those little particles out that get through the air intake.

Any help would be appreciated.

What engine and year? There are usually a short and long version of each filter.

If you have enough room you can go all the way up to a "2 Qt" filter. This is a common Chevy V8 filter.

Basically a difference in length and maybe a minor .00x in diameter for the 2Qt

Gary:

Thank you for the information. My next question is...how do you do the X-ref for larger sizes on the wix website? Am I missing something?

Yes, you're missing something

I've used these filters ..so I had a clue how to do it. I knew that they were available on 70's Chevy/GMC trucks. So I just plugged in the HD truck application guide from the "filter lookup" ..there they had the "2quart" reference (and two or three other part numbers) ...clicked on them ..tape and paste.

The oil pressure will not change if you go to a bigger filter. All that means is that you'll have to add more oil.
