Larger filter for a 2.5L Subaru Outback??

Any options on a larger filter for a Subaru 2.5L???

I've been running stock-size PureOnes and Wix...I have lots of room for length...

On my 2007 Outback any longer filter would have the element too close to the headers.

IMO, the stock filters work well and nothing longer is needed.

I prefer the standard sized filters. I just make sure my oil is filled to the top line on the dip stick.

Like Bill said, it doesn't need a bigger filter. I run the normal sized WIX filter for 15,000 miles on my two Subaru, and the used oil analysis results are stellar.
 
Year does matter.

Anything bigger or longer will have contact or be too close to the headers.

Here is a photo of the filter and header setup.

Longer would have it closer to the headers and even with the heat shields they get hot since the cats are in there too. (you can see the cat in the lower left hand corner)

WOW, that to darn close as it is, what a stupid set up.
Unless there is good air flow around that area, the filter is going to pick up a lot of heat from the exhaust.
Shame, shame.
 
Thanks for all the responses...I have a 1997, and could run the filter that's on my Cummins if it would fit the threads (it has that much room).

I'm going to look into the filter Gary posted, don't really want a filter with different threads...

I'm looking to do this since I'm currently running 5k OCIs, and might consider longer OCIs based on used oil analysis. The larger filter is just peace of mind (and a touch more volume)...
 
You get into flow issues when you get farther away from the oem filter,design wise. I would over fill 8 oz. before I would get a filter designed for a different application. .02.

Titan HAS run 15k on the *stock* size filter with PERFECT used oil analysis.

Not needed. Just stay with the stock filter.

WATCH your used oil analysis for extended OCIs. My 8-9 month one for my Subaru with PP stunk.

I'll stay with NO more than 6 months or 7.5k miles MAX.

Very different beta ratios...I would assume the latter (6/19) is the better filter? (Its been a while since I looked up beta ratio)
 
I'm fumbling here...but...

Based on 1000 particles of 2u and 20u sizes, six particles @ 2u and 19 particles @ 20u would pass the filter..correct???

No.
I know its hard to grasp, it took me awhile.
2/20=6/19
That means 50% of 6u particles will make it through while 95% of the 19u particles will be captured.
Heres the math:
2-1=1 1/2 or 50%
20-1=19 19/20 or 95%

Its the left side that has the beta and the right has the microns.

You are assuming that heat is a bad thing. Actually, heat is a good thing to burn off condensation. Also, quick warm-ups contribute to better efficiency and less emissions. The problem is if the design results in EXCESSIVE heat. I have zero problems in my two Subaru in the hottest of ambient conditions, whether idling or pulling a steep grade at a high speed.

It's at least a non-issue...it might even be a design with a purpose of quicker warm-up as exhaust headers are quick to get hot. However, I do not know that for a fact. There's just not much surface area on that filter surface.
 
I don't think that the filter clearance in the image is bad at all. Lots of Chevy SBC's have headers a lot closer to the filter than that and live to talk about it.
 
If it's the same quality media, yes. It should have a lower velocity at all flow rates, which should improve efficiency ..and it should have higher holding capacity. Now whether you challenge any of the standard sized filter's capabilities is up for grabs.
