Does anyone any freeware programs on computers that let you scan obd2? I heard there are a couple but i am not having any luck finding them. I eventually want to get lt1edit but not at the moment. I basically just want to check oxygen sensors/ses/temps and a few things like that.

Also, where can i get the cable to connect obd2 to whatever it connects to?

I have a hypertech cable that i may be able to use. It has a 15 port male gameport on one edge that i could probably convert to many things.

It's not the software that's the problem, it's the interface chip. OBDII does not speak over a standard PC protocol. (COM port baud rates, handshaking, etc) There are chips like the ELM 322 that do that work for you. I got a premade interface from, IIRC, http://www.obd-ii.net that read a couple dozen unencrypted sensors. All freeware I've seen to work with this interface reads the same unencrypted sensors.... stuff like TPS, coolant temp, spark advance (but NOT directly knock retard) o2 voltage, trouble codes & clearing... System was ~$65 a couple years ago.

I see you are in MI, correct me if I am wrong but you have no emmisions testing. Given that might I reccommend an OBD1 swap. Which LT1 vehicle to you have? I know I can finally be of some help to someone here

. If you can do the OBD1 swap I can point you at all the scanning/tuning software plus the cable for less than what you would pay for OBD2 LT1 Edit alone without any logging/scanning.
I have run OBD1 in my 96 Caprice for several years now.

Just some feedback on a product - I bought the software/interface package from Harrison several months ago and have had very good results with it. Cost was about $150 for everything as I recall, but it has been well worth it in being able to do an intelligent evaluation vs throwing parts at the vehicle. He also includes free updates to the software as well and is responsive to questions.
It's not the big-dog unit that the dealer uses, but it does the job.
The only extra thing I got was an adapter cable so I can use either a serial or USB port, depending on what laptop I use.
One case in point - got a code on my 95 Vic, Autozone scans and says EGR valve. However, there are several components that can throw that particular code, and I knew that EGR valves are not usually replaced on these cars. By using the software, I was able to narrow the problem to the DPFE sensor that controls the EGR valve and replace that instead of the valve itself. Problem solved - reset the computer, code was gone and I spent $40 instead of $95.

What is involved in an odb1 conversion? I have a 97 z28 camaro. I would like to get the odb1 because it seems a little less sensitive to certain things.
