I think you are "assuming" they are stock. Unless it happened to YOUR particular car and you know for a FACT that the vehicle was never modified in ANY way. Are KYB's the best? No, but they are VERY good. Like any GOOD company you have failures. You know how many failures Bilstein Has? Koni? LOTS on their OEM equipped cars. I know people that have Toyota pick ups, Lancer Evo's ect that the bilsteins fail, Vipers that Koni's fail, KYB's do too, so its no surprise. So its not just KYB. I am sure their failure rate is STILL better than average or Chrysler, Toyota, Mitsubishi and COUNTLESS other OEM's wouldn't use them at all. The KYB's you buy over the counter are just as good as OEM in quality. The only difference is the rates that they are calibrated. For 95% of the population KYB's that you can buy over the counter will do just fine.

Jeff

You don't need to think about it, and I'm not "assuming". The 3rd generation Dakota platform had a lot of KYB failures. Mine is among the victims.

If you'll notice, I didn't say that KYB produced nothing but junk, and neither did anyone else. I don't see why you're having such a problem with others disclosing that they have issues with a KYB product, or their recommending another brand. You act like we called your mother ugly...

While I have had a KYB fail it was on a 9200 pound van that will quickly kill a good shock. I still consider them above average.

The factory front cartridges on my Chrysler are Bilstein. So are the factory shocks on my 05 Silverado. Now those are some fine shocks!

We are currently testing Gabriel Ultra's on one of our fleet trucks and I am excited at their apparent blend of good performance and cheap prices.

I'm sorry guys, but I have saw quite a few too many KYB failures at my work and in my 30 yrs of life and I believe I will stick with either Monroe or KYB's honestly. I couldnt get the KYB's ultras that I wanted as CARQUEST moron parts guy flat out lied to me saying "I gave you the wrong part number". Instead both of the rear struts would be like 250$ that I cant afford, sorry. I went with the Monroe Sensatracs and am happy so far. I dont care for high priced bilsteins, etc either, as I cant afford high priced exotic stuff.

Just got both my Monroe sensa trac struts for 100$ total. I'll let the BITOG faithful/educated figure out how, and oh yeah KYB'S Ultras were originally 200$ piece; NO THANK YOU.

I like the Monroe Sensatrac better than KYB. I like OEM the best but they are usually $$$. Sensatracs are probably the best value going and best choice.

Hello Mechanicx and yeah I could've got OEM struts from my buddy at HONDA dealership but would've been 190$. I will see how the monroe sensatracs act after installing them tomorrow morning. Thanks for the advice.

Rear springs seem to wear much faster than fronts in your typical FWD cars.

(spring rates are much lower in the rear due to lack of weight)

But after 10 years it seems very common.

I have to say, I've heard way too many stories of people looking for a firmer ride, install AGX's and 6 months later they behave like stock struts.

Now GR-2's (now excel-G i believe?) should last longer because of the lower damping setting.

But consider monroe claims struts should be replaced every 80K miles (yet lifetime warranty at canadian tire for example) yet bilsteins are lifetime warranty and are advertised to do just that.

Late model sensatrac struts are supposed to be closer to OE than they have been in the past 5 years.

Supposedly they are going to start changing over from "sensa-trac" to "OE quality" or something to that effect.

we have high mileage cars in the SRT8 community with 160k miles and still excellent front dampening from the stock Bilsteins.

Factory 20's with huge tires, a 2 ton plus luxo high performance car, big Brembos... no one drives these cars very easy.

I don't know if they ever wear out.

The dollar sign goes before the number, eg $100.
