I am wondering if the Briggs & Stratton Commerical Turf series engines and the Kohler Confidant engines are both proven and capable engines? Is either engine known to have problems or are they both long lasting and reliable?

I just hit 5 hours on my Briggs Commercial Turf, so I can’t comment on longevity but I can tell you that it starts up easier than a Kawasaki FR series motor.

No comment on the Kohlers besides that my neighbor has over 1,200 hours on a Kohler Courage; loudest thing on the entire street, but it starts easy and runs well still.

Bet he has a broken exhaust pipe or muffler.. I got a John Deere with a kohler from a friend and when I cranked it my first thought was "what's wrong with this thing its so loud" he thought it was normal.. Exhaust pipe broken at engine.

I like both Briggs and Kohler myself.

Looks like the Confidant might be an evolution of the Command Pro? I have two ancient zero turns (a Scag and a JD) with over 2000 hours each on Kohler Commands and they still run like absolute tops despite being regularly abused/neglected. I'd assume most of the v-twins Kohler is selling these days are Command based given the reputation that engine has.

My newest zero turn has a Kohler 7000 (non-pro) and while I only have 3 hours on it the power is impressive and it's the easiest starting mower engine I've ever had.

That being said I think a lot of John Deere's newer mowers use B&S engines or John Deere branded engines built by B&S and I don't hear of them scattering parts or being junk.

While I think Kawasaki engines are far better engines that either. Between the two choices, I'd go B&S no contest. I've had several of the newer Kohlers apart and they are an engineering mess. Not to mention the horrible Courage series that were an abomination to Kohlers reputation. Older Kohlers up to the Command series were bullet proof, newer ones make you wish you had the bullet to shoot yourself for buying them.
I've had a couple of the B&S Pro series, and as has been stated earlier, they start far better than anything I've ever used, and in my case were very durable and trouble free. I wouldn't be afraid to go back to them.
