I purchased a used, perhaps late-90's New Holland LS45 with a Kohler V-twin in it-- I can't identify the engine however, because the decal affixed to the side has worn off and isn't legible. There is a sticker on top of the engine which lists the serial and spec number. These are 2711208067 and PA-65543 respectively. Can one identify the engine using either of these two numbers? I want to say I can read CV-23S as model number off the worn-out sticker, but that's not what would normally ship with this particular mower. It was listed as an 18 horse, which would be a CV18-S. Can anyone help me out with this?

It's a 1997.

CV20 (Command Vertical) 20hp

AFAIK it's basically a 18hp block, crankshaft, pistons, rods, etc. With some changes (from kohler)
like heads, etc. to get the extra HP.

Many thanks for the info. How exactly is the serial number decoded? I'm not doubting you at all, but this would suggest that the engine in my mower is not original. The machine should have come equipped with a 18HP Kohler V-twin, and to further blurry the lines, mine is a 2000+ model. I have the Hydrogear 330-3000 transmission which was only used from 2000-2003. Earlier LS45 models, mid-90's to 2000 had the Tuff Torq K61.

Add the number 70 to the first two numbers in the serial number will give you the year.

I have forgotten how to read the rest of the serial.

The info telling me it's a CV20, was using my work computer program PartSmart. Home now.

But if you go to partstree.com, click on "Kohler Engines", then in the "Search by Model and Brand" type
*65543 and click search (this is your spec number minus the PA-. It will give you part breakdown.

* (star is used for a fuzzy search. In kohlers case, the spec number is unique to that particular engine.

Hope this helps.

92SaturnL2: Glad my tip about the For Sale listing worked out for you. Good luck with the tractor. If you get stuck with any technical questions, try contacting New Holland HQ for help.

Yes it is-- it is essentially the same thing as the Toro/Wheelhorse 267-H. I need to get a deck/blade spindle for it, there's one on there that's making a lot of noise. Any suggestions on where to find parts for this beast? It must be a 2000+ model, because it has the Hydro Gear transmission, not the Tuff Torq K61 which the 90's models got.

I don't follow- what engines are junk? The Kohler Command CV/CH series?

I dislike the words junk this or that. We had the same id10t comments about the Fram orange can which turned out to be better than some famous competitors. Ed
