Does thicker oil impact oil temperature?I use Mobil 1 Turbo Diesel Truck 5w40 in my 18HP JD garden tractor. 25 abusive years down the road, the thing still runs perfectly, uses no oil and will outlive me.
I use Mobil 1 15W-50 in my gas powered generators.
As I've mentioned here before, the use of adequate viscosity in air cooled engines is a must in high temp environments, especially when oil temp is not well controlled. I regularly saw oil temps above 270ºF. That's too much for 5W-30.
I would say yes- thicker oil increases friction and that increases temperature - your solution may be part of the problem.
To many variables to say but it would be a nice test if someone could set it up.
