I fired up my 16hp Kohler Command today and the valves were clattering like crazy. The engine has 85 hours on it with 70 of those being GC 0W-30. Changed the oil and filter with Quaker State 10w30 and a new filter and the clattering was gone. I had read how sensitive these engines are about oil but I didn't believe it until now. Mowed for an hour and it ran perfectly. A case of Amsoil ASE will be on the way this week.

My Command 20 sounds the same on Shell RT 5w-40 as it does on a $1/qt 10w30. Nice and quiet. I have heard exactly what you say though, they supposedly can get tappy. I can't confirm this, but I heard the command series hydraulic lifters are interchangeable with a short block chevy.
