Hello,

Say I have some wax from last year on my car. I want to prep before doing klasse SG for a few coats and then a top coat of carnuba.

Would Klasse AIO be a good thing to get down to a base layer, or would I be best off washing with dawn dish soap first?

Im really happy with the hi-quality caranuba over klasse AIO and layered SG, but last yaear was the first time I did this. Id like to repeat it, but I just want to be sure I prep properly first.

Thanks in advance,

JMH

When I do a strip down about once a year. I'll use my fav car wash and use a few drops of dawn detergent to strengthen it up.

It usually strips down really well, without damaging clear coat.

Washing and paint cleaning are two different tasks and require different procedures.

Washing your car only remove surface dirt and grime, not the stuff that's embedded in your paint. Nor will washing remove oxidation, paint stains, light swirls, etc. Wash with whatever you like, but car wash shampoo is recommended.

Klasse AIO is a great paint cleaner and prep for SG. Since it's been some time since you last AIO'd and SG'd, I'm betting your paint could use a little more TLC than just a simple wash.

I'd suggest this plan of attack:

(1) Wash with your shampoo of choice.
(2) Remove tar spec, tree sap blobs, etc.
(3) Clay paint (if needed or desired)
(4) Apply Klasse AIO to entire car, including wheels
(5) Apply Klasse SG, same as above
(6) Wax paint

As we move into summer you can touch up areas with the above process as needed.

Good luck. Have fun. I detailed two cars today (M5 and 911) with a friend and it still took us 11 hours non stop. I spent 8 hours over the previous two days polishing my truck. Might have a couple more cars to detail this weekend. It's that time of year....

I agree with bretfraz. Just a side note.......with Klasse SG wipe on and wipe off immediately. Unlike AIO when SG is left to dry it can be a bear to remove.

From my personal experience trying with/without dawn dish soap I've always had the wax/sealant last at least a month longer if I start by cleaning the car with dish soap. The key to getting the new sealant to "stick" is to make sure the paint pores are not clogged with old wax, or old soot/fallout etc. Dish soap strips the wax, clay barring makes a huge difference also since it pulls out a LOT of dirt that dish soap can't. Once you've done those two things, now it's safe to apply new sealant successfully. (or start buffing)
