I'm a short fat 70 year old man and I fail to see where a 2 1/2 gal. jug full of oil is heavy in any way.

IIRC those kitty litter jugs are made with Food Grade plastics, which is not designed to hold petroleum based chemicals such as motor oil.

That doesn't mean you can't use it, but I did ran into similar situation once where I had to store dirty motor oil inside a gallon jug from Fry Shortening & the jug started to melt inside out. The detergents in oil may have been dissolving the Food Grade plastic.

I use a wide funnel to avoid spills when I dump used oil from my drain pan into the cat litter container. I also use one of the bucket style Tidy Cat containers to store my used oil filters. Nice heavy duty plastic with a secure lid. Works great and I stash them all neatly under my work bench.

What do you do with the oil filters?

There is a good local independent garage not far from my house. When the Tidy Cat bucket gets close to full I stop by the indy shop and dump the filters in their oil filter recycling barrel. I believe American Filter picks them up from there and they get recycled. I dump my used oil at AAP. Then I bring the kitty litter jug home and it goes in my own personal recycle bin, the garbage guys pick it up every Friday.

I've got a Kitty Liter jug sitting in my garage now for 6 months, when it gets full I'll take it to my local garage who uses the oil for heat in the winter. Waiting for it to get full. The last one sat for over a year till I turned it in.

I use these things

That would be approx. 30+ lbs, more than I'd like to lug around.

But it makes illegal dumping a breeze!
(ah joke)

I've used the same two Tidy Cat containers for probably 15 years and even stack them to save garage space. When one gets full it sits on the floor and when the other gets full it sits on top until I get a chance to dump them at AZ. Maybe I've been lucky but they're very sturdy.

As stated I use the Kitty Liter "jugs" to store the used oil in till I take it in to recycle. But I also put the jug into a Kitty Liter "pail" as one time the jug slipped out of my hand when taking it out of the trunk and oil all over, plus less likely for jug to tip over while on the road to recycler.

The kitty litter plastic containers seem to be a very thick plastic. Afterall, it contains heavy cat litter. Much thicker plastic compared to the Deli Cat food plastic container. I have some power steering fluid sitting in the litter container now. Is it ok to mix oil in there? Then take it to AZ when it gets full.

Should be fine. I did the same thing when I replaced my Power Steering pump.

Been using kitty litter jugs for years. I did have a problem just this month though. I had a few off brand jugs that were starting to leak. They had been sitting for a month or so as I had been down with a broken leg. I got my wife to take them out to the curb for pick up before they got too bad.
