kia quality

Same as the Hyundai Sonata - while much is still an unknown with the new GDI engines , I am confident as Hyundai spent huge money and time on the R&D of it's GDI engines . If you search on-line for Hyundai GDI engine technology you can learn alot about what they did to build in the quality .

yes, i am one of many who said, "use to be called throw=away cars".iam asking for my neighbor... kia has come alone way. right?not asking about hyundai but kia...gdi engines are prob on the way out because of bad deposit prone problems....he just bought this and the other choice was the ford fiesta he could not afford anything else....

I have an 08 Kia. I have looked at new Kia's very closely (thinking about a hatchback). 2011 Kias are a step above 2008, and I have been VERY happy with my Spectra. I've had far, far less problems with it than I have had with Toyota Tacoma.

The build quality is likely world-class. The dealer experience might not be, if Hyundai dealers are anything to go by.

I guess their quality is the same as Hyundai's now, which is pretty good.

Before I signed on the dotted line, I'd do a search on "direct injection engines and carbon buildup" though.

If I am not mistaken KIA/Hyundai offers the 2.4 liter engine in both DI and non DI versions.

The 2.4 liter engine is manufactured here in the United States at their new plant in Montgomery about 100 miles north of us. The engine plant there is undergoing a major expansion.

Wife has the 2.4 liter non DI engine in her 2010.

the kia/Hyundai 2.4 that is held in such high regards, kind of funny this engine is raved about in the kias but when they are under the hood of a dodge they are considered [censored], even funnier is chrysler manufactures this engine for kia/hyundai, it started off as a joint venture then chrysler bought out the other portions and is now the soul owner. just goes to show that people will hate chrysler no matter how good the product.

no chysler doesn't own kia, but they had a joint venture with kia/hyundai to build a series of engines that both company's would use, they called it a "world engine". the link is somewhat old but what has happened recently as of the past 2 yrs is chysler has bought out the majority share of the venture.we have the 2.0l version of this engine in my wifes 2010 dodge caliber and it is a great little engine, i couldn't be more pleased!

Kia has come a long way under the stewardship of Hyundai.

Their first car in North America was a knockoff of the Mazda 121 sold at Ford dealerships. It wasn't completely terrible. In some ways it was better than the Suzuki sourced Geo Metro and Subaru's lone inline engine car. But it was pretty unremarkable. It morphed into the Aspire and finally the Rio.
Then they built a knockoff of the Mazda Protegé....It was not very good compared to the Protegé. Not even compared to the Escort built on the same platform.

When Hyundai took over, they of course started using Hyundai platforms. They started to resemble Hyundai in reliability....but man were those cars ugly.

I ate his liver with a side of fava beans and a nice Chianti

...and the faux wood inside was worse than anything sold on ebay now. a weird orangish....just weird looking.

But now? Wow. We had a new Kia Optima in the shop for an install awhile back. Other clients were stopping to look at it and take pictures with their cel-phones. I've had a Bentley, Rolls Royce, Gallardo....etc... in my shop on many occasions and they were checking out the Kia.

The basis of the engine is the same. Chrysler uses a different intake and exhaust manifold. I think Chrysler just bought the naming rights to GEMA
Hyundai calls it the "Theta"
Mitsubishi calls it the "4B1X(T)" (ie:4B11T in the Evo-X)

I'm a constant Chrysler defender, but I gotta' admit, the Hyundai Theta (before GDi) felt more responsive than the Chrysler GEMA. The Sebring was very smooth for a relatively big 4 cylinder but it felt gutless compared to the Sonata.

The 2.4 KIA/Honda Engine was developed jointly by Chrysler, Mitsubishi Motors, and Hyundai Motor Company.

Development was done when Chrysler was owned by Mercedes (DaimlerChrysler AG).

yes Kia has gone up in quality ---but so has everyone else.

I had to rent a Ford Focus for a trip to Pittsburgh -about 300 miles away. I AVERAGED 43.6 mpgs (I took photos and I plan to write a mini review.) I also rented a Hyundai Elantra not NEARLY as nice in terms of how it drove.

I am NOT a ford guy I've always been into small imports myself. But I was pleasantly surprised.

I'm actually going to write a mini review of the two when I get a chance.

A 2012 Elantra isn't nearly as nice a driver as a 2012 Focus or a 2011 Cruze. I've test-driven all 3, and the Elantra just didn't work for me. It might be put together well and be a very reliable car, but driving it wasn't that impressive.

I was impressed with the Sonata, of which the Optima is the Kia re-skin. That car drove very nicely, much better than the Elantra IMO.
