So I ordered a few oil filters from a "Kia dealer" on eBay. Today I went to the dealer in town and bought a filter to compare to the ones I ordered from eBay. The first thing I noticed is the W that is stamped into the baseplate is not the same. The pattern design that is stamped on the center tube is not the same. The lettering on the outside of the filter is far more finely detailed on the one from my dealer here in town. Also the square that outlines the drawing of the trash receptacle on the filter is not the same size. The one from eBay has made in Korea below there trash can drawing and the dealer one has nothing beneath theirs. These are the differences I noticed just by visually comparing the two. Oh, and the eBay filters came in a Kia motors box and all the ones I have bought at the Kia dealership have been in Hyundai boxes. These differences are enough for me not to trust the eBay filters to install on my car.

I would not worry about it. I just bought a filter for my sonata at a Kia dealership last oci and came in a Kia box.

That's because Mobis does a ton of parts for both Kia and Hyundai

Cut one! If its a fake the differences will likely be glaring once you get inside it. Plenty of both OEM and fakes on the net to compare it to.

Will one of those chain style pipe cutters work on a oil filter? But before I start cutting things up I want to see what the two filters on my cars right now look like when its time to change the oil on them.

Those are pretty heavy filters. A difference of .2 ounces is relatively small. If the difference in weight was wider, I might be concerned about the ebay filters possibly being counterfeit.
