I did a couple of drain and fill cycles with distilled water, and then installed the Kia Long Life coolant that I got at the dealer.

It says on back that it was made by Idemitsu, and lists phosphorous as one of the major ingredients, so I assume that it's a P-HOAT.

The thing that suprised me was how dark green it is, it looks almost black in the overflow tank. Kind of a bummer, I think, because if you didn't know any better, you'd say it was dirty and needed to be changed, even though it's brand new. I think having coolant this dark colored is a dumb idea, but oh well. As long as it works, I guess.

Makes me wonder if the Ford Specialty Green also looks like this. I think it's also an Idemitsu fluid.

Anyway, this is the 3rd fluid change on this car in 65K miles. First at 30K, 2nd at 47K when I got in a rear-ender and needed a new radiator, and now at 65K. Frankly I flat out forgot about getting new fluid at 47K and thought I was 5K overdue on my 60K coolant change. The old coolant looked similarly dark and now that I saw the new stuff, I don't think it needed to be changed.

I think I will run this coolant to 100K and change it out when I change the spark plugs. Kia recommendation is 30K but other Asian manufacturers run much longer with Idemitsu made coolants. I think this P-HOAT can do 35K.

I think it is one of the Japanese coolants but hard to say if it the regular life or the extended life. The dark green color makes it seem to be extended life like Mazda/Ford speciality geen, but the short service interval makes it seem like the non extended life.

Maybe if the jug has any other ingredients on it you could post then we could tell.

My Mazda came with green coolant. Not sure if it is the Japanese Idemitsu stuff or Ford's coolant. My manual states "Replace at first 120,000 miles or 10 years; after that, every 60,000 miles or 5 years.

Interesting...I just purchased Kia Long Life Antifreeze/Coolant (concentrate/not a 50-50 mix) here in NY on 4/25/12, and it does not have phosphorous listed in the ingredients. There is a statement on the container saying there are no amines, silicates, or borates, with no mention of phosphates.

The complete printed list of ingredients is:
Ethylene Glycol
Diethylene Glycol
Water
Sodium Benzoate
Potassium Hydroxide

Also printed on the container: "Part No: UM040 CH 012" and "Made in USA".

It is very green.
