Kia/Hyundai TSB

I've seen the TSB posted here dating to 2005 and more recent dating to 2012. Won't link but there's a 2013 thread here which fairly well covers it.

While Fram may have been original the target culprit, according to the link (scroll) the Kia TSB shows an ecore as an example of a filter that would be an inferior aftermarket and possible culprit. I wouldn't put many/most other aftermarket filters in that class though.

And it seems at least for PrimeGuard filters, they have decided not to mess with recommending their filters for H/K applications. Pretty sure that has been discussed here before too.

IIRC correctly the Fram rep here mentioned a tweak of the filters for those cars. I am honestly not positive on that, but I do know the Fram 9688 series have been stellar on KIA when we used them.

As mentioned I think the original TSB pictured an ecore filter.

As far as I can tell, the TSB really only applies to older canister filter vehicles and cheap filters. I don't believe it is a current issue although it seems it won't die and I'm sure it has sold a lot of OEM filters, which are indeed well built as well.

+1 .... I have had no problems with any of the oil filters I have used on my Elantra. I have used OEM, Hastings, Baldwin, Purolator, Bosch, NAPA Gold, NAPA Silver, Mobil 1, FRAM Ultra and Tough Guard with no issues at all.

That TSB document has to be one of the most misinterpreted documents out their for vehicle maintenance. Most incorrectly interpret it as meaning any aftermarket filter is grounds for warranty claim denial. The simple fact is the TSB has to be interpreted by who the intended audience is, the vehicle tech and service writers giving direction on what to do in the event of a bad aftermarket filter, not that all aftermarket filters are bad.

Hypothetically, let’s say you changed your own oil for the life of your Kia/Hyundai with a Fram orange can and a synthetic blended oil and then developed engine ticks etc. that the dealer denies warranty on.

Would Fram step in at this point and help you? If they didn’t, how could they claim that their filter meets OEM specifications when Kia/Hyundai says it doesn’t?

Most Hyundai's will tick. It's usually a sign you need to change the oil or brand of oil. I know of no warranties denied for the oil filter.

Most Hyundai's I have witnessed at work that tick is from the injectors. We use 5w30 without issues and OEM filters on all Hyundai's and KIA's

GDi engines or MPFI engines?

I think I saw that Hyundai is fairly up there with the pressure for their injectors. Dang, I need to bookmark more of my interwebz research.
