I've been seeing youtube vids where they use sat. dishes for different things, such as melting stuff, boiling water, etc. Thought it be kinda cool to experiment with it along with my son, once escrow closes at our new place. The ones on Youtube are usually 7',this one's huge at 10'. Btw, Iheard that sunlight is like 27 watts of energy per sq.ft. If this one is 10' diameter, and 10x3.14' for circumference is around 31.4',is that the sq footage?

Are you sure you wouldn't rather watch TV with it?

Word on the street is if you coat them with aluminum foil you can indeed make a sweet hot dog cooker. Focus the thing on the sun by having the LNB's shadow hit the "bulls eye" in the middle of the reflector.

If you have the "jack" with it you can use a 12 volt battery to move the thing to follow the sun.

Thats a bud = big ugly dish. I would love one but the wife already tolerates mission control on my roof. The only reason is tons of channels. Id use that bud for some c-band. Or burn ants.

Or talk to ET and his Family

I got rid of my 7' BUD a couple of years ago. It became more of a PITA after Videocypher and Digicypher went away (and programming costs went through the roof). Got an OTA MPEG reciever and that worked OK until they went to a different format that was incompatible with my receiver (4:2:2, I believe). By that time my neighbor's trees had grown to the point of limiting my view.

It used to be a great hobby, but hot-dog cooker is what it has pretty much devolved to.

My brother had a cigarette lighter that was a mini dish - maybe 3-4 inches across.
It would light a cig in a few seconds in sunlight.
It had a holder to orient the cig. Similar to concentrating the sun's rays with a magnifying glass.
Remarkable how much energy is there!

C band LIVES.

Plenty of FREE and pay stuff still sent over it a lot more interesting programming from all over the world, plus it has a very powerful signal and with the large dish signal reliability is much better than that of DirecTV and Dish.
