Hello all. I recently purchased a 2016 Genesis with now 57k miles.

Yesterday I switched out the coolant. The coolant itself looked fine, however, upon removing the reservoir to clean it out, I notice a good bit of “stuff” at the bottom. I say stuff because I don’t know if it’s dirt or corrosion or whatever.

I’m wonder what I should do now to make sure all this gunk is cleaned out?

Thanks

My bet it's all out and has settle in the recovery bottle. Some makers on the assembly line put a stop leak tablet in the system and what you see is probably from that.Clean out the bottle if you haven't done so yet and keep an eye on the coolant level. You will be fine.

I recently changed my coolant and like you, I had a good bit of stuff stuck on the bottom of my reservoir. I took a garden hose and aimed the nozzle toward the bottom and applied the highest pressure jet I had. After about one minute I had most of it out. Whatever remained is nothing to worry about.

In my experience there are a few things that work.

If there's any oil type residue I address that first with an industrial type degreaser or laundry / dishwasher detergent. Add clean hot water, cap, shake, soak, rinse. Repeat if necessary.

Acid soak. Add hot vinegar or hot water with citric acid powder. Cap, shake, soak, etc.

Salt and acid. Add enough rock salt to vinegar so that it doesn't entirely dissolve. Cap, shake, soak, repeat. The undissolved salt will act as an effective scrubber.

Which one of these works the best will take some experimentation but I've found them all helpful in the past.
