Just another rant about GM.

The fervor that people have for Japanese branded vehicles never ceases to amaze me as the absolute worst car I have ever owned was a Honda.

It had the funky CVCC motor and after seventy thousand miles that engine belched blue smoke like a house on fire. The seats were covered with material that looked like it came from a potato sack, except it was not of sufficiently high quality cloth to sack potatoes - the seat fabric wore holes much faster than potato sacking ever would. The body was made of thinly stamped material that you could push in with a finger and rusted at the first opportunity. After about three months, I realized the styling of the car was at best strange, and at worst, butt ugly. It was a true piece of junk that was sent straight to the boneyard when I got out of school and could get something better.

The new ones look to have a bit better fabric on the seats, but have the same cheap front wheel drive architecture, the same flimsy body panels that you can push in with a finger and the styling is, well, less than attractive in my modest opinion. I think I'll start bashing Honda's every time the brand is mentioned.

A Volkswagon Jetta GLI was the second worst piece of junk car that I ever had, but I'll save that rant for a thread when German cars are being lionized ....

Even the OHC Honda engine on my pressure washer is of low quality - it's noisy, a gas hog, and hard to start compared to a Briggs or a Tecumseh.

On the other hand, I really like my new GTO, it has the most comfortable seats I have ever sat in, including my Jaguars, a big 'ol gas guzzling pushrod american V8 engine, and is just a real bargain for the price GM is charging for these cars. I also have no complaints about my S-10 Blazer or S-10 pickup. My next new car will be another GM, Ford or Jag.

GM may do some things wrong, but they have done plenty of things right.

My mom's replacement for her 1997 Ford Escort is a 2004 Chevrolet Classic. It's basically the 2003 Malibu with the 2.2L Ecotec engine. It is an ex-rental or fleet car.

The only issue I have with it is the lack of a dipstick for the transmission, but I will make sure the transmission gets serviced at around 30,000 miles. It also does not, for whatever reason, have the oil life monitor. (I wonder if the computer still supports the oil life remaining PID..if it does I should be able to use an OBD-II scantool to check and reset it).

(By the way, it has, at 19,000 miles, no oil consumption at all during a 3K interval..pointing that out since I've heard some claim on this forum that GM engines have oil consumption problems. Not this one.)

I can change the oil in it without even jacking it up. The cartridge filter, accessed from the top of the engine, is a nice design. No puncturing a metal canister and letting it drain for 12 hours (I have something against tossing an oil filter out without draining it; the cartridge filter solves that problem because it doesn't trap oil).

The transmission has to be one of the smoothest shifting automatics around. The headlight and wiper controls are exactly as they are on the Escort (on steering column stalks), which is a nice layout and which I believe is derived from Asian cars. The gauges are nice and easy to read.

The only ambiguous control is the one labelled "lockout" on the driver's side..I had to look that up in the manual to find out that locks out the power window controls. The function of every other control is obvious.

One nice feature is that it will sound a chime in addition to lighting up a dashboard indicator if the fuel is low. It will also do this if the engine should overheat. (Many an engine has been destroyed due to overheating because the driver didn't see the gauge until it was too late). I believe it'll sound a chime if it loses oil pressure, too.

In addition to that, it will apparently sound a chime if you leave the turn signal on for more than about 1 mile. I haven't tested this feature.

It also handles pretty decently, especially given that it's on OE tires. It has plenty of power, too. It won't break any drag-racing records but it'll get well past the speed limit before the acceleration lane runs out.

On top of that, it gets 24 city/34 highway which is one of the highest fuel economy ratings in the midsize class.

I don't forsee any problems with this car. I did purchase the service manual on CD, but that has more to do with my curiousity about how the systems on this car work than any concern about it's reliability.
