JD X585 25 hp. After sitting a few days the starter does not do anything. If I hold the key in the start position and knock on the selonoid a few times with a small hammer it engages and starts.

Does this sound like a bad starter or solenoid. I am thinking solenoid but not sure.

What model year is it, how many hours on it, is the battery original, have you done a load test on the battery…?

Not familiar on your model but is the solenoid on the starter or separate ? I have a BS 14hp powered motor that needed a solenoid that the tap on it made it connect. Separate solenoid.

If it's a separate solenoid, bridge the two big terminals with a screwdriver etc the starter should turn. If it does not, the problem is not the solenoid. If it does turn with solenoid bypassed, it could be the solenoid, or it could be that the solenoid is not getting power from the small wire that leads to the key.

Solenoids attached to the starter are different.

Those solenoids normally just dont carry current from corrosion/arcing. Once you confirm it is bad following the advice above, take it agart and clean up the contacts. No need to buy another one if yours can be repaired for free or the price of some rivets and sandpaper.
