Job Interview follow up

They may have interviewed a dozen people for a position but your one follow up may ring a bell in the hiring manager(s) head that reminds them of a strong characteristic or trait that may have stuck out during your interview.
 
Sometimes seeking and interviewing for jobs can be strange to say the least.

Wife had a job interview a couple weeks ago. School she has been teaching at for 29 years is closing. She wants to keep working to stay busy since she enjoys it. She teaches Early Childhood Development and she loves the little ones.

She did two interviews.
Interview #1) went great and then turned strange once she left. The woman just about begged her to take the job. So wife tells her "let me think about this tonight and get back with you." The interviewer even made her take some books home with the curriculum she would be assigned to teach.
Well, there is nothing but a bee hive of gossips in this area. Between all of the private schools and especially all the younger teachers they can not keep one secret. LoL Lots of the stuff they spread even ends up being not true or suspect. Several of them were all trying to get hired to all be at the same school. They simply can not keep from gossiping and telling all they know ASAP.

So , the wife decides due to job being so close (5 mins from home) to accept the position. Next day she could not get in touch with the interviewer (Principal). She finally goes in person one day later with the books. Principal now had an entire different attitude... "oh, I am sorry. I must have not been clear. I did not offer you a position yet." "We are still working on several other grades and positions."

Wife came home dumbfounded. I was not in the least bit surprised. I told her. "I would bet any amount, that a handful of those gossips instantly spread that you told folks you were hired." (Not true at all) I know the wife is no gossip. She has learned from years in that type environment to keep quiet. Maybe word got right back to the Principal she was spreading that around? Who knows? Funny part is the other teachers those gossips were trying to get hired also were not offered those positions. Matter of fact not one has been hired yet.

Interview #2) was the good part of it. The school I really felt better of a fit for her and much more financially stable called. It too is a private school but is in an entire different school board district. So the very one we had both discussed, the one we both liked better and even prayed on called her. Surprise, those folks sure were 100% different. They had a very friendly 3-4 person interview team who would not even allow her to leave without making her tour the facility and accepting a job. Very same position as the other school with one nice difference , a $10,000 a year raise. She just has to drive a lil bit further than before for a better position all around. Old school was about 5-6 mi and new one is just 9-10 miles from house. Plus her mom lives right in the middle so she can stop in and check on her each day on way home when I do not do it for her mid day.

Was this a face to face in person interview or an online video Zoom , Teams, WebEx meeting ?

I do NOT like online interviews….

Recommendation is to already have the thank you letter written, to include a stamped envelope before the interview.

After the interview, if you are interested in the job, place the thank you letter in the mailbox closest to the place of the interview. The interviewer may recieve your written thank you for the interview letter as soon as the next day.

You will more likely than not be the only interviewee to send a written thank you note, but the interviewer recieving a written thank you note by USPS as soon as the day after the interview will set you apart-- way apart, in a very positive way.

I've heard stories that someone who "sounded desperate" could be eliminated on that basis. Some hiring managers don't like the sense that they're being manipulated by someone trying to curry favor with something other than their qualifications. You never really know.

Were you the consultant/ adviser to Shadeur Sanders on how to get drafted in the first round of last weeks NFL draft?

Comon you been hitting the bottle early this evening?

Sending a thank you letter is manipulation? You must be counting on your folks money for your retirement...... your thought process does reflect someone who has much real world life experience.

There are a lot of stories about hiring managers who decided against someone for the most ridiculous reasons.

I personally wouldn't find one to be terribly useful, for the reason that it's a known thing in job seeking guides and seems rather formulaic. It has nothing to do with the qualifications to perform a job. And the claim that sending a letter by mail personalizes it is one where I'm not sure it could help all that much given how fast decisions are made now. How many people expect to get mail these days at work where they check their boxes every day? A lot of the interviews I've had, the interviewers said they had to present a scorecard that day or the next morning or they were huddling together after the interview.

At the very least it almost never makes a difference. The place to be cordial is at the interview.
 
I stopped the practice of follow up correspondence.
I have a brief spiel I give near the end of the interview, when they ask if I have questions.
I thank them for their time and attention.
I highlight my experience, flexibility and get it done attitude.
I tell them I play well with the other kids, follow the boss' directions and am not afraid to come in early or stay late for crunches.
I emphasize that I am both a methodical and intuitive troubleshooter. (Electronic Technician)
I let them know that based on my experience working with very talented people and my observation that I am much above average and finally that I am certain I can benefit their organization.

Then, Thank You Very Much, Have A Great Day Everybody. You have my number.

Done.

P.S. Almost forgot, as a senior man, I have a hack for that. I ride my bicycle to the interview, in spandex and a bright cycling jersey, helmet and shades. They cannot help but see a 70 year old man, but one with LEGS and a tight butt. A 70 year old man with game, not some old guy with one foot in the grave.

How long and how you like being an electronic technician? I just recently moved to my companies operational technology dept position title instrumentation electrical technician we’re basically electricians and work on anything and everything electrical related.
 
Electronic Technician ?

I consider myself one since I’m in the medical equipment business (repair/ test / calibration / prevent maintenance).
 
I did hear back from the hiring manager. They replied to my email a few hours after I sent it. It was just a brief reply saying that it was a pleasure meeting with me and they were hoping to make a decision soon. This was better than never hearing anything at all.

How long? Mid 1970s.

How do I like the work?
For the most part I have found it interesting, challenging at times, due mostly to management.
I have broad product experience...
power supplies
computer peripherals
telecom
industrial electronics - electronic maintenance, Lockheed Missiles & Space
lasers, medical and scientific
consumer products - robot vacuum, sous vide cooking device
groundwater remediation
high speed test instruments

Had I known then what I know now, I would have focused my education on one of two specialties. Traffic Signal or Municipal Water.
The JC that I attended has changed the curriculum wholesale. They no longer offer the electronic fundamentals I learned that gave me the knowledge I relied on.

Water and sewer good place to work well any public utility is.

That's all that we do. 99% of my meetings are online with people 1000s of miles away. Being able to communicate via Zoom is crucial. I just hired someone a month ago via zoom. I might see her in-person for the first time in September. The other people on my team have been with me for 3-5 years and I've only met them in-person about 5 times each.
