1st Break-in: Mid-90s Honda Civic had its car stereo stolen, and the steering column destroyed.
2nd Break-in: Late 80s Accord got its window pried open and glove compartment searched.
3rd Break-in: Last night, neighbor's 03 Sedona got its OEM stereo stolen. Not sure how they got in.

Neither the Civic nor the Accord had any type of theft-deterrence device. However, the KIA probably does have an OEM theft-deterrence device, like the type that comes with a keyless entry system, but no alarm.

Note that the Civic and Accord belong to my next door neighbor, but the KIA belongs to someone across the street.

Interestingly enough, right across the street from me, an 05 Highlander and a 03 RAV4 sit there undisturbed, but the Highlander has an aftermarket alarm and the RAV4 has an OEM Toyota V.I.P. Alarm. I wonder why the thief didn't try to break-in to those cars and bypass the alarm, as they have much nicer stereos.

I think you'd really have to know what you're doing to not make any noise breaking into a car with an alarm. I know I couldn't do it on my own car, or any of the cars in which I've installed alarms.

As long as there's a car they can hit without an alarm, they'll go for that instead.

M W,
sorry to hear about the rash of breakins in your area. not good.

years ago (88 i think) my cousin mark got out of his monte carlo, turned on the clifford alarm, went inside his house, took a shower, came out and the car was stripped to the frame. it was sitting on concrete blocks and the ONLY thing left was the alarm system. they even gutted the interior.

Nobody much pays attention to alarms. One of my idiot neighbors has a car with an alarm on it, and every few months at least it goes off. And they ignore it. At one point I called the cops because it woke me up and it was obvious nobody was going to shut it off.

Betcha I'm the only person who called.

By the way, on a good day a KIA oem stereo might get $50 on Ebay, so I have to wonder what kind of idiot would steal one.

Just razzin'... but the proximity of the break-ins and your knowledge of the alarm systems and stereos in the two cars that didn't get broken into... hmmmm...

Mike, contact local recent returning Iraq vets to assist you with booby trapping a stripped junkyard Honda with a good paint job and lots of good looking stereo equipement blanks/covers to suck em in, then BAM

, no more thefts...

Dispose the remaining vermin and parts of same in proper OSHA approved receptacle.

Update Guys:

Actually it was worse than I thought. I talked to the neighbor today and found out that they didn't steal the OEM Kia stereo, but they actually stole the DVD Rear Entertainment system by breaking the rear lock (sliding door) and taking other possessions in the car.

My area must be getting worse....same thing happened to one of my classmates last night who lived not too far away.

I grew tired of having to live through all that crap. We now live back in the woods and crime rate around here is virtually zero. We have no police department (we call the state police, who come from a barracks 20 miles away) because we don't need one.

Life is a lot less stressful now.

Vermont is one of my favorite states, and this is precisely the reason why. My Aunt spent all of her 90 years in that state and the only crime she ever was privy to was a kid stealing a pack of gum.

Not to turn this political, but Vermont has the most relaxed gun laws in the country, and is the only state in the union that doesn't require a license to carry a concealed weapon. This is kind of an anomaly to the anti-gunners that insist gun ownership leads to epidemics of mass violence; conversely it can be stated that private gun ownership helps prevent crime. After all, an armed society is a polite society.

That's exactly my point, Dave. Watts and SCLA are overrun by criminals and have been for years. A criminal can and will get a gun if he wants to, meanwhile the rest of LA's honest law-abiding citizens have a PITA due to the restrictive gun laws. Criminals know this.

However, if the crooks don't know who's packing don't you think they'd think twice about their next car jack, rape, home invasion, etc? I know if I decided I wanted to be low life scum and rob people for a living, I'd go to NY or LA. I'd stay the heck outta Vermont.

When I hear stories like this, I'm glad I have a factory radio that has the VIN programmed into it. That makes it worthless to a theif.

Years ago I had a stereo stolen from my '79 Caprice. That sucked. They busted up my dash in the process.

Also, several months ago I wound up calling the cops about a car alarm. It went off 3 or 4 times in the middle of the night and I was getting sick of being woken up. Whatever happened, the alarm stopped after that.

kingrob I am all for people who want guns to have them. But if people want to take something they will. I bet 99 percent of the time there not thinking of who is armed and who is not. At least I would not be. But thats just me. The reason why I brought up the Watts and S.C. thing is when they rob someone if they have any common sense there is going to be a good chance that the person being robbed is armed or even more stupid they know whom the person is that is robbing them.

Most of the crime we have up here is drug related and involves out of towners, mostly in winter. (I am within 20 minutes of 4 ski areas).

There is the occasional homicide, but it is usually among family and friends, and not random.

What does seem to be reported a lot is sex abuse of underage victims.

I don't want this to turn political, but I have Democratic leanings, and am also an NRA Life Member. So Vermont is paradise to me.

Post a search for "Kia Stereo" or somesuch within a 5 mile radius on ebay, and have it send you email when one gets posted from your neighborhood. Then look at the seller's feedback and other items.
