Hello from a freezing New Jersey.
Weird things happening with the 4.0 Jeep.

1) I changed the coolant after a Prestone flush, and the engine revs at 2000 rpm when I start it up. Almost everytime! even after shutting it off for ten minutes or what not - What gives?

2) Could it be the Water Wetter I put in?

3) Franken oil (6w45??) is scaring the beJesus out of me in this climate, I have a stash of GC ready to go with a wix filter that I want to run till Spring. Is the GC good for winter, or should I step it up and get some Moobil 1 0w40 instead.

PS: I dont care what anyone, or any organzaiton, or Gov't entity says: Its going to be a very very brutal winter up here. NOAA has said we're to expect 55"-100" of snow this Winter. so I want to be readdy, how ever its spelled.

Much missed Bitog, hope everyone is happy healthy and had a excellent Holiday Season so far; Bring on
Christma-Hana-Eida-Kwanzaka!

GO ARMY, BEAT NAVY!

Could there be some air left in the cooling system ??
I'm thinking that if some air was trapped, it will always see it as cold, and bring the engine up to 1500-2000 RPM. But then again if it comes down after driving a bit, then this wouldn't be the problem. The other thing is that it is normal for some vehicles to idle this high during warm up if it is very cold out, like it is today here in NH. (30 Degrees F)
This said, I'd also dump the frankin oil, and throw in the GC.
It's winter time, and a 0 weight will help with cold startup.
That being said, may say that GC is almost a 40 weight at temp anyway, and that Mobil 1 0w40 shears down some. So you are probably looking at similar viscosities.
Use what you have, and change it out again in spring.

Spray some TB cleaner in the little bypass port on the throttle body above the throttle plate. Do it while it's running. Little squirt ..stumble ..recover ..squirt ..stumble ..etc.

Unless you knocked off a vacuum line during the coolant swap ..the AIS motor is sticking. Don't discount the vacuum hose. My neighbor's Rubi had one off for a long time. When we found it (love that ultrasonic vac leak detector) ..it took awhile for it to recover from shifting. I don't know if it was a PCM thing or just having the AIS closing and opening since it had been mostly slammed closed due to the manifold leak.

The engine won't shed any tears with heavier oil. We may get lots of snow, but I doubt it will be super cold. All our snow comes from the South. I don't see many single digit days ..maybe a week of single ..a week or two of teens on either side ..then hovering just below and above freezing. Now snow will do some reflective thingie ..but..

I hope they're all traffic stopping blizzards. No one here knows how to drive in snow ..and regardless of how clear or not the roads are, rush hour invariably produces metro area choking fender benders at the slightest amount of the stuff. It's like Black Friday for the body shops.

HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAH Thanks for tips and this fine closing paragraph Gary.
I'll TB clean it first thing I can. Maybe some Sewafoad and blah blah blah too while I'm at it. My weekend off from work is all done with. Thanks again.

My 94 Wrangler when I had it, in the winter would roar at 2k RPM's, like its howling(motor roaring sound) and it would go down. It's probably that you never noticed it and now you did. My Xterra roars to 1.5k RPM's on cold mornings. In the summer it would be at about 1k then down to 750 in park/idle. The engine is cold, its sucking in a lot of dense air.

On both I did the TB cleaning and it idled smoother(same RPM's though and had more response and less sticky feel on the pedal.). Just the way they are I am presuming. Only thing I did notice is my MPG's are HORRID now due to the weather. Averaging 220 miles to a tank. Same commute and driving style :|.

One more edit.

Hi NJ buddy! I'm in Wayne NJ, what about you? Been getting cold lately(especially today).

Hey Amyguy.

I'd go with the other folks recommendation of cleaning the TB and maybe see if there is air in the cooling system.

As far as oil goes, I started my '89 XJ 4.0L this morning when it was 18*F running a jug of SuperTech 10W40 and a qt of MMO. I'm guessing it's about a 7W37 (sounds cool huh!) and it started up just fine. The Q-Torquepower 5W30 in the YJ works pis-sah.

Both my XJ and my 2.5L YJ trail rig idle up to around 1200-1300 when you start it and drop to about 1000 after a few seconds. Despite running a 4.0L throttle body on my 2.5L, it acts normal(the 2.5L TPS was swapped over though). They idle at their normal rpm's after a minute or two. The IAC can get a little coked up a bit, so remove it and clean the plunger.

Talk soon.
