4.7L i-Force V8. Somewhere between 200-250HP. They resolved the problem with the planetary failures in the later models.

Interesting,
It only ever backed up the 6 cyl in the Jeep. 185-190 hp.
I always wondered how it would hold up behind a V8.

the issue with my grand cherokee 2002 transmission was bad shifting. it would shift very very hard if i got on it to get on the highway. you would feel it rev up, one sec later it would slam into gear jerking the snot out of you... later it was just over all shift issues. it was well maintained and i never abused it. maybe i had one in a million [censored] transmissions but i know 4 other guys with 00-03 models and ALL of them have transmission issues starting at 75-80k miles.. i personally think that what Aisin makes for yota is different that what it makes for Dodge\Chrystler\jeep.. thats just my opinion though.

Your grand Cherokee has a completely different trans than this AW4 we've been discussing here. The AW4 was only used in the smaller Cherokee (XJ) and the very early G Cherokee's (ZJ)late 92-early 93.

If it was a V8 yours should have had a 45RFE/454RFE trans
which is a beefed up design that was derived from the 4 speed Caravan trans. Generally they were fairly decent.
If it had the I6 engine I believe it was the 42RE which is an evolution of the old torqueflite 904 with an overdrive stuck on and some electronics.
They were way more problematic.
