Jeep ignition system... Help needed!

I have 258 I-6 powered 87 YJ with a Howell TBI conversion kit and the stock style ignition system. When I take it out on the trail it will stall out and will refuse to start for anywhere between 1 and 30 minutes. After that it magically starts and runs like a champ. I have narrowed this down to the ignition system as I am not getting any power out of the coil when it stalls out. I've replaced both the coil and the icm with no improvement. If anyone has an idea where to look next please pass it on... Any advice is appreciated!!

Does it have that Ford type of ign box on the fender? The ones that have a color code where the wires enter the thing?

Yes, it does. I initially thought it was the problem but I didn't see any change when I replaced it earlier today.

One other thing- it ran great for the first six months after the conversion but went downhill after that.

Did you check if you have power going in? Are you checking at the coil itself or at the end of the coil wire HT lead?
Possible bad ignition switch or even a bad coil HT lead.

I did check the input power and it was good... but I didn't even think of the HT wire. I'll check that later today!

I think I have it down to the pickup coil. I put the meter on it and it read 0 ohms. We'll see what happens!

check the box to see if it has a steel piece soldered to copper. steel does not like to be soldered, you will need silver solder. or rig some wild set up.

The pickup coil inside the dist was bad on mine doing the same thing. I sprayed cold water on th edist to cool it and it would start right away, R&R the pickup and worked fine..carried a spare after that as I spent lots of time in the dessert and was glad I did.
