I know they recalled a small number of Jeep Grand Cherokees even thought the NTSB wanted them to recall more. I am not sure if there is a safety issue with my Jeep or not. I believe it was the gas tank behind the rear axle. I am not sure if they are considering recalling any more.

I assume my Jeep has the gas tank issue. They sell a rear skid plate which is a heavy duty plate that replaces the current gas tank shield. Or I could install a frame mounted trailer hitch.

Opinions? Comments?

I bought a Curt hitch a few years ago planning on installing it on my Jeep. Then got the pickup with is 3/4 ton with a hitch. So the hitch sits in a box.

IIRC correctly the only actual dealer "recall" modification is to the prior GC, the ZJ 93-98 models, which they install what looks like a hitch to correct. But it's not even really a hitch. I'd just put the hitch you have on your WJ and forget about it. I put the Curt hitch on mine as well I like it.

There is an airbag recall too I need to have that done.

The recall essentially installed a trailer hitch.

Honestly, the Cherokees that were recalled met all the safety standards for the years they were sold, and have a fatality rate that is actually lower than some of the peer vehicles of the time. The folks calling for the recall also left out any of the older Grand Cherokees and Cherokees that had exactly the same setup. Made no sense...

If you are worried about it, I'd install a trailer hitch and be done with it.

Give you a voucher towards a new one?

We've got a Grand Cherokee that has an open recall because of the Pinto gas tank and I haven't taken it in....yet. I'll probably do it this summer or at least talk to the service manager at the local Fiat dealer and go with my gut feeling after that. I'm never going to do any towing with it, so it would be for the safety factor more than anything.

the hitch is more substantial than the bumper. if you want to install heavier duty skid plates, it certainly won't hurt.

I had a '93 zj. favorite care I've ever owned... so show your some love and do the hitch and the skid.
