We have a 2000 Jeep Cherokee and I noticed the other day while checking my oil that it looked thinned out and smelled like gas. my initial thoughts are that its an injector issue because the motor only has 85k miles on it and I ruled out rings. Any input on this issue is it probably a leaky injector? the swap looks fairly easy if that's all it is. Thanks!

2000 and 2001 Cherokee 4.0s have heat soak problems that affects the injectors sometimes,..injector could be sticking open when engine is shutoff and fuel from fuel line is dripping on piston, gettin past rings into oil.

Leaky injectors will definitely cause this. My friend tried installing rebuilt injectors on his 4.0L from Precision Auto Injectors. They leaked while the vehicle was off and his oil smelled like gas. At first we thought it was the famous fuel check valve issue causing the longer cranking time on a cold start, but it turned out to be the injectors. I pulled the fuel rail, and with the fuel pump primed you could actually SEE them leaking onto a paper towel.
He ended up sending them back and putting the old ones back in which fixed the problem, so I'd definitely say leaky injectors are your issue.

Pull your plugs, the one (or more) that's gas fouled will be the one that's leaking.
You could pull the injectors and send them off to be rebuilt if you can stand the down time.

When I was tearing my 2000s 4.0 apart, I noticed one of the injectors was in fact cracked around the electric plug in area. Kinda spider web cracked, like a bunch of really small cracks in one area. Looked like it got Hot, and almost bubbled the plastic housing. Does your fuel rail have a pressure regulator in the middle of it? Some 99, 2000 and 2001s do and some dont.
Its a small regulator, about as big around as a half dollar.
