Jay Leno's Garage

I like Leno and who can keep from envying his car collection. But in watching a few episodes of his "garage" on YouTube, I noticed that he really doesn't know as much about cars as he thinks he does.

Examples:

1. In the video on his 1989 Bentley Turbo R he states that his car is one of the last of the old "body on chassis" cars. Not true. Rolls-Royce/Bentley began building unibody cars with the introduction of the Silver Shadow in 1965.

2. In the video on his gorgeous unrestored 1967 Chrysler Imperial, he says several times that the car has the "old" cast iron Torqueflite transmission. Not true. The iron case Torqueflite (A488) was introduced in 1956 and was replaced by the aluminum case A727 in 1962.

With the number of cars that he has, he can't possibly be en expert on all of them.

There was the video on the Redline site where Jay was giving the company some air time promoting their products. Jay called MTL an additive and mentioned he used straight 50 weight in the Dusenburg since 20W-50 was "too thin"

He is a car guy with enough $$ not to have to know the details; that is why he hires mechanics. I don't really question his sincerity. I'm sure he is busy guy (for a bit longer.)

True. My point was that he obviously thinks what he has said is true (I choose not to believe he would intentionally give erroneous data about two of his cars), therefore, he thinks he knows more about those cars than he really does. And, IMO, this is basic stuff, not automotive esoterica that only a true "expert" would know.

I don't care what he knows or don't know about the cars, I just start drooling heavily every time I get a peak at his cars.

He knows quite a bit, but he also owns a lot of cars so I'm sure some of the specifics get lost.

He knows a ton about steam cars, T heads, Duesenberg head castings, and chain drives.

A multi weight might not be ideal for a Duesenberg I8, I wouldn't be surprised if they preferred straight weights in the 50 range.

Leno is a car enthusiast not a mechanic. He at least gets dirty trying I will give him that.
